Fort Elysium, Dragon Continent.
Captain Kunz was in the canteen eating breakfast with Captain Miller and Malashenko. The officers had been discussing lessons learned about this world when a private sheepishly approached their table and saluted.
"Beg your pardon sirs, Colonel Lebechev has requested Captain Kunz in his office as soon as possible."
Kunz thanked the private and said his goodbyes to the others. He got up with his tray and put it in the cleaning bins and headed out of the canteen. He walked across the busy base. Multiple vehicles and men passing back and forth. Preparations for moving the villagers and fang members by air were still underway in combination with the arrival of more troops from the portal. Kunz waited for a BTR-70 to pass by before he walked across the road to the large office complex for the commanding officers. He saluted the two guards at the door and entered. He was met with the usual busy reception room and guided to Colonel Lebechevs office. He knocked on the door and was allowed to enter.
The office itself was sparse with a few filing cabinets and the two seats in front of a large oak desk. The walls were empty besides a handful of picture frames with pictures. One was a younger version of Lebechev in a commissars uniform in a desert setting beside an officer that looked somewhat similar to Malashenko. The other two photos were one of a large house by a lake and one showing a frowning woman in a dress at some sort of party.
Kunz refocused on the smiling man sitting at the desk. The desk was bare except for some papers and an ashtray. Kunz stood at attention and saluted the Colonel.
"Captain Kunz reporting as ordered sir."
"At ease, Captain. Take a seat, do you know what the purpose of the FSB is?"
Kunz sat in one of the seats before the desk. His eyes went towards the blue shoulder patches on the Colonel's shoulders before returning his gaze back to the Colonel.
"The Federation Security Bureau is in charge of all security and intelligence duties for the Federation. Answerable only to the Chancellor and Congress."
"Yes, It is a job that comes with responsibilities and risks. I am sure Colonel Bannon has told you that you are now under my authority?"
"Yes sir."
"Has he told you what you will be doing for me and why?"
"No sir."
Kunz sat there awkwardly and stiffly as he watched the Colonel pull out and light a cigarette.
"You have experience with logistics and operating in hostile environments correct?"
"Yes sir, I was with the Logistics Department with the Great lakes section. Before that I was with a mechanized unit helping deal with the Californian anarchists and the war with the Cartels."
"Your experience is what we in the FSB will need for operations in this new world. You will be heading a team of operatives that will infiltrate a kingdom of this world. Your team will be tasked with gathering intelligence, working with White Fang groups to do tasks, and setting up an outpost for us. We will need this for deciding our future stance with this world's kingdoms and with our plans on colonizing parts of this world. You will report directly to me. Do you understand and have any questions?"
"Yes sir. If we will be alone in this kingdom, what sources of money and supplies will we be given?"
Lebechev leaned back and pulled open a drawer in his desk. Then he pulled out something that looked like a dollar but was different.
"Lien is the currency of this world. Some of the villagers have gifted us a few hundred of these bills. When you arrive in the kingdoms you will receive more from the Fang and they will provide transport and housing. I have also had our clerks forge fake identity papers for your team and yourself. These will work for traveling and if any of you need to apply for any jobs or work as needed."
