I pick up my phone answering the call from my mom

I pick up my phone answering the call from my mom.

"Hey, mom." I tap on the armrest of my chair steadily. As much as I love my mom, she only calls out of the blue if she wants something from me. Either a request, a date, or an explanation.

"Hey Ales, how's today going?"

"I don't think you're calling to ask about my day."

"You're right." She sighs with a soft laugh. "I just wanted to say Mr. Garcia might pop in really quick today, please hear him out."

I let out a deep sigh, "Ok Mom, I will."

"Thank you! Just remember, be polite," she adds.

"Yeah."

"Love you, bye!"

"Love you too." With that, my mom hangs up and I place my phone down.

I take a seat on my desk chair and start filling out some paperwork. I stare at the two files on the corner of my desk for a while but continue with my work. The files have not been touched since and I fairly don't know what to do with them. There's a ring from my intercom and a voice follows.

"Sir, Mr. Garcia is here to see you." Hellen, the receptionist says from the intercom.

"Send him in."

Not long after Mr. Garcia walks in with his famous friendly smile. His salty brown hair styles are neat but casual and his brown eyes shine with happiness. His eyes crinkle with a smile when he walks into the room and always seems to make a room brighter with his presence. Everyone loves him and his comforting personality, he also happens to be my Dad's closest friend since high school. He's always been a good friend of our family and has such a cheerful personality for his work.

"Good afternoon Alessandro, long time no see." He smiles politely.

"Nice to see you again Leonardo." I shake his hand and he pulls me to a manly hug patting my back firmly.

"You're all grown up! Gosh, these kids grow up fast." He mumbles the last part thinking about something or someone else.

"So what did you want to discuss," I say with a chuckle as we sit down.

"Right. Our families have known each other for very long, and your parents want you to get married so they suggested I introduce you to my daughter." He says straightforwardly. I open my mouth to argue but he stops me.

"Hear me out first, Alessandro. " He says, his eyes softening. "This is completely your choice to get married or not, we are not forcing you but we thought that my daughter could be a good choice for you if you decide to marry her. This is also completely her choice, if she doesn't want to marry you that's a choice no one can change." He says.

"You have a daughter?" I ask downright confused. He looks shocked and confused for a moment but a grin starts to slowly creep up his face. His eyes seem to shine brighter if possible and he seems exited.

"Of course I do! My little angel! Have you not met her yet? She's a little crazy at times but she's an absolute joy to be around with! She's strong like her mother but always cheerful!" He switches up and starts gushing about his daughter proudly.

"I thought you only had a son?"

"A son? Where did you get that?!" He asks as confused as me.

"What about Carlos?" I ask.

"Carlos?!" He questions horrified.

"Yes? You're always seen with him on business and we all assumed he was your heir and child."

"Carlos is my nephew. He's always with me because I'm basically his babysitter for free. After all, he's such a troublemaker at his age." He shudders thinking about Carlos.

"Oh." Is all I could say. I mean I knew about Carlos's extremely childish behavior, in fact, I dealt with it when Leonardo decided to completely abandon the teenager with me.

"Don't worry, my daughter is not as bad as him, in fact, she is just like me!" he grins excitedly. Is that supposed to be comforting?

"Ok then, I'll think about it," I nod and his grin expands impossibly wider.

"Great, I'm sure you'll get along with her," he says, patting my back reassuringly.

"Sure."

"You should come over this weekend for dinner to meet her. She's awesome!" he gets up happily as he leaves the office.

Great now I have to meet someone I may have to marry. If she expects me to marry her she's delusional to say the least. I could always decline the request but it seems rude with how much Leonardo has done for me growing up.

"Ace, am I free this weekend?" I call him over the phone.

"Yeah your free, I think?" he responds sleepily. Was he really sleeping? There's shuffling for a little from the other end of the phone before he speaks up again. "Saturday you don't have anything and Sunday you have 3 meetings in the morning."

"Scuedule dinner with Mr. Garcia on Saturday night and contact him." I say and hang up.

I lean back in my chair, sighing deeply. Meeting this girl better be worth it. Still, a part of me feels uneasy. I close my eyes for a moment letting the silence of my office wash over me.

Its not like I want to get married but I understand the importance of this. Plus its safer to marry someone whose family is close, that way they won't be much of a stranger. But then again I've never met her and don't know her personality.

My thoughts are interrupted as my phone buzzes. It's Ace again.

"What?"

"Mr. Garcia says its a great date, your dinners at 7 at his house." he chirps.

"Ok."

"No thanks?" I hang up immediately.

I shake my head, trying to push away the irritation. Marriage is an extra responsibility. An extra person to take care of. I may not have to love her but Ill need to keep her healthy and alive for the sake of her father.

I stare at the ceiling, contemplating the weight of this decision. Either I marry her and cause her misery or I could reject the marriage and the threats resume, but she doesn't have to live miserably.

I grab my car keys and depart my office locking it as Ieave. I walk down to the garage as the thought of marriage still lingers in my mind. The media already thinks I'm dating the girl from the bar and now I have to get involved with another woman?

I'll figure it out Saturday. I say to myself, determined to make a decision by then.
