Hours later...
An oddly-shaped contraption outside is swept away by a producer grumbling about how 'we were supposed to let them find it'. Noon comes and goes. The hours tick by. A van rolls up."Eli, River, Star, the three of you will have to come with me."
And the van is gone.
"Looks like we'll be in a team," says Ty.
"The better one." Julia says, wincing sideways at Ash.
"What do you think we'll be doing?" asks Ty.
"More importantly, will there be exemptions on the table?" adds Julia.
"Is there going to be a table?" says Ash.
"Depends," says Ty.
"We can use many things as tables," agrees Julia.
"Like?" asks Ash excitedly.
"The chair Simon ties us to and makes us call our family that we're kidnapped and they have to come rescue us?" tries Julia.
"I'm actually not that sus of you, so I'll take that as a good sign," says Ty.
"And I'll take that as a compliment," replies Julia as another van arrives.
We climb on and chat away as we ride down the streets.
"You know, after last night," Ty says, "I didn't think the Gamemaster would let us have a... calm day today."
"Talk of the devil," says the radio in the car.
"Mr. G-"
"ASH, I KNOW YOU WEREN'T AT BREAKFAST, BUT I WASN'T ACTUALLY GOING TO BLOW ANYONE'S FACE OFF! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!"
"My face is still here."
We hear the sound of a large object breaking, then some heavy breathing.
"Anyway, I have more bad news."
"I have a request," says Ty.
"Fire away."
"FIRE?!" cries Ash. "AGAIN?!"
We hear another object break as Julia tries to untangle a screaming Ash's grip on her arm.
"Can you guys please tone it down with the punishments? Please? I'm trying my best."
"I can see that, Ty," replies the Gamemaster, clearly having given up on hiding his anger and frustration. "In fact, the reason the four of you aren't up for exemptions today is because you were in the top half of quiz scorers last time."
"Oh, really?" says Julia, sizing up the rest of the car.
"You guys will get one last challenge before your long-awaited next quiz-and it's laser tag."
"Awesome!" exclaims Julia.
"I'm excited to play again," says Ty.
"What's it like?" I ask. "I've never played before."
"You're about to find out," says the Gamemaster. "As an advantage for doing well on your quizzes, you guys will have comms with your teammates, shields on your vests, as well as access to both floors. And because we've come to know you guys well enough over the past week, for every member of the opposing team you shoot down, you will add $10,000 to the pot."
"$30,000 in total?!" squeals Julia.
"Big stakes," nods Ty.
"However, for every one of you the opposing team shoots down, that person will get an exemption for a round, starting from this quiz."
