Mac's POV

San Francisco

A Bit Farther from L.A. than You Think

We follow Kendrick through security cameras to the hotel he's been staying in. The goal now is to find him and capture him. Jack and I had quite the conversation on the way here... and I would say an even heavier one before we ever left. Looking at my life, I can't say this man took absolutely everything from me. To say that would mean I consider Jack and Bozer to be for naught. However, he took a larger part of my life than he realized.

"We know you can't replace Nikki," Jack told me, "but we're here for you. Nothing is gonna change what happened—not even killing Kendrick."

There's a lot Jack doesn't understand—doesn't know—but my friend could feel my hurt a mile away. He knows three months ago that my heart and future were crushed by Kendrick. It may not be too much of a stretch to say the bullet that killed Nikki changed the course my life was heading toward.

BANG!

I heard it on the plane followed by the loud crying of my newfound ghost as I found myself dozing off from lack of sleep. After I shot straight up in my seat, Jack decided he was going to stay as close to me as possible. The man is determined to protect me from anything—even the things in my head.

"So, how're we gonna find this guy?" Riley asks as we ascend the stairs inside the hotel

"So, how're we gonna find this guy?" Riley asks as we ascend the stairs inside the hotel. "No way he checked in under his real name."

"You know, she's right," Jack adds. "We don't have time to search room by room."

They're completely right. Kendrick has been on the run for years. This is nothing new to him, which means he's good. With this virus in play, we don't have time to dance around with him. It needs to be found now. Luckily, I know just the thing to do.

"We'll make him come to us," I tell them.

"How are we gonna do that?" Riley asks.

"Tinfoil."

"He's kidding, right?"

"Oh, my man never jokes about tin foil," Jack explains.

And to the maintenance closet we go.

That old saying, "Where there's smoke, there's fire," isn't always true. Sometimes where there's smoke, there's just smoke. Muriatic acid mixed with ammonia and tinfoil creates a chemical reaction that releases a lot of smoke with absolutely no other by-products.
