Annabeth helped me suit up my armor. Let me tell you, that shit is not light. I pushed the thought of fighting way out of my mind, I just had to worry about trying to run with thirty pounds of metal strapped to me.
The Athena cabin was the blue team along with the Apollo and Hermes cabins. The red team was Ares and the rest of the cabins, minus a few Aphrodite kids who thought the game to be "beneath them" or something.
We all crowded together and faced the opposition. Annabeth and Luke stepped forwards, facing who I guessed was Clarisse and was about the burliest girl I'd ever seen. She was tall and muscular with wild dirty blonde hair jutting out of the sides of her helmet.
Chiron stood beside the three of them.
"Remember the rules: no killing, no maming. All magical items are allowed. The game begins at the conch."
He retreated from the campers and the conch sounded.
The game began.
Earlier I had been assigned patrol towards the outskirts of the forest near the stream. Annabeth assured me that there wouldn't be too much action taking place over there.
I found my way over to the spot and leaned myself against a tree. I hadn't bothered to ask how long these games usually lasted. The last thing I wanted to do was sit in the woods for two hours.
Thirty minutes passed and I was bored out of my mind. My adhd brain wanted to do something, anything else but sit staring into the trees.
I missed my phone. I had left it in the destroyed car on the side of the road earlier that morning. Even though I couldn't have it at camp anyways, something about monsters and service, I wished it was somewhere safer.
I slumped down into a sit and unsheathed the sword I had been given and fiddled with it.
Crack.
I tensed at the sound and tried to make myself as small as possible. The sound had come from behind me.
Crack
It was closer this time. Someone was talking towards me. I clenched my sword and slowly stood. Stupidly, I jumped from the safety of the tree and extended my sword towards the target.
The boy shrieked and hopped backwards. It was Ronan.I sighed a sigh of relief and lowered my sword.
"You scared me." I said pushing him backwards jokingly with my open hand.
"Sorry." he apologized.
"Well actually, double sorry. I'm gonna have to fight you little sis."It was weird to have someone call me 'little sis', but I didn't even think on that in the moment.
He grabbed his own sword and readied it.
"You're kidding." I said panicked.
I raised my sword again and backed away. I was full of fear, I'd never even held a sword before, much less fought with one.
"I'll take it easy on you." he teased.
I steadied myself, taking a deep breath.
"Hopefully you'll do better against me than Dominique." I snickered, hoping it'd throw him off his game.
He swung his sword and I slammed my blade against it. I took a jab at him and he dodged it, jumping to my side. I turned quickly and swung again at him but missed. He took another try at me and knicked my bicep. I winced and slammed my sword into the hilt of his. He dropped it and shook his hand out.
"Well played." he said.
"I'm a natural professional." I smirked.I felt pretty proud of myself, but not too proud considering Ronan had been a pretty awful opponent and now my arm was bleeding.
Then yelling came from closer to the riverbank. We both turned towards it and ran, hoping to catch a glimpse of what hopefully wasn't Clarisse with the blue team flag.
