"Jacob" "Jacob!" James says as he pushes my arm.
"What is it?" I groan and get up as I rub my eyes.
"Let's go right now is the perfect time to get the traitor," James says as he puts his helmet on.
I sigh and get up. The night is dark. The stars flicker ever so slightly.
I put on my helmet and watch as James grabs an cocks his rifle. I look to my side, and for a brief second, I look at a corvun soldier. His eye falls out of its socket. His clothes were bloodied. I stand up in a panic, and as soon as I blink, it disappears.
"What's wrong with you? You seem like you've just seen a ghost." James says.
I look down, rub my eyes, and look at James as I say. "Just still sleepy thought I saw something."
"Don't get too distracted. Get your gun we gotta go." James says.
I nod my head, grab my gun and helmet, and nod to James.
We climb out of the trench cautiously, crawling on the mud until we make it to a small forest.
"How are you so confident they're here?" I ask.
"Where else would they go? Walk around no man's land like fools?" He says.
I nod my head and keep walking as we walk down the forest.
I take my flashlight and wrap my finger around the ring of the string. James puts his hand on mine and says.
"Don't be stupid! They'll see that light from miles away and run the other way. We gotta be more sneaky than them here."
"Right.." I say and let go of the sting as we walk down the forest
I look around and sigh as we keep walking. Walking. And walking.
James crouches down and inspects the ground.
"The grass has been stepped on. There's boot tracks here aswell. One bigger one smaller. Male and female. Exactly who we're looking for.
I walk toward James and nod my head as he gets up and follows the tracks. I go right behind him.
"What do you think they'll do to him?" I whisper.
"Probably arrest him. Maybe a beating, who knows for the girl.. she'll probably be imprisoned as well." James responds.
I nod my head once more and keep following James. He tracks every little thing. From the footsteps to a broken twig.
"How did you learn all this?" I asked.
"My father used to take me hunting showed me how to track a dying animal," James responds.
"A dying animal.." I whisper to myself.
James stops the faint sound of moving is heard in the distance as he says.
"Footprints lead here. Keep a good eye out, Jacob. Traitors always play dirty."
"Yes, of course.." I respond.
James signals for us to split up. He continues north while I go northwest.
The smell of gunpowder is in the air. Mud.. wet grass, and trees as well. This place, even if it wasn't a warzone, wouldn't be the prettiest.
I continue walking. A thought hits me from time to time as I wonder about Alexis. Is it truly wrong that he left this place?
What am I thinking? Of course it is! He betrayed the nation that birthed him. He betrayed an eternal debt to this land. It's not like they'll kill him anyway. They told us it was a simple punishment.
