THE COST OF LIES

ϟ 𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐃𝐀𝐘, 𝟏𝟐/𝟐𝟐/𝟏𝟐 ϟ

"LEO?" Tasha Davenport called as she rapped her knuckles sharply three times against the boy's bedroom door. On a Saturday morning, she knew her son would usually be quick to get up and spend time with his siblings -- only when she had walked in the lab, the three were alone with no Leo in sight.

Her worry only doubled when no response came. Her hand quickly fell to the knob of the bedroom door, turning it softly before she pushed it open. She peeked into the room first, before stepping in and softly closing the door behind her.

After years of raising him, she could recognize the gentle rise and fall of her son's chest in his sleep -- and this wasn't it. He laid in bed, his covers up to his chin as he faced away from his mother, towards the opposite wall. One might assume he was sleeping. Tasha knew better.

"Honey, what's wrong?" his mother asked as she gingerly stepped closer to the bed, taking a seat on top of the comforter by his legs.

"Nothing," the boy murmured softly. As Tasha peered around to get a good look at his face, she found eyes open and staring ahead at nothing.

"Try again," she spoke, voice slightly stern but still caring.

Leo sighed loudly as he turned on his back, sitting up slowly and propping himself on his hands as he looked over to his mother.

"Me and Ellie aren't friends anymore," the boy spoke quietly, almost incoherently.

Tasha's heart started to beat a little faster. They weren't friends anymore? How could such a thing happen?

Ellie had been Leo's longest friend. She had supported her son through everything since the two had first met. They were peas in a pod, and sure, they argued, but they always made up.

"What do you mean, Leo?" Tasha asked as her brow creased in worry.

"She lied to me," Leo spoke glumly. "She's not really my friend."

And then, the lightbulb went off in Tasha's brain. The connecting of two memories occurred. She remembered, almost two months ago, going dress shopping with her honorary daughters, when Ellie had told her something. She let out a breath that she didn't know she had been holding.

It had meant so much to her when Ellie confided in her about her feelings for a boy, but her resolve to keep the secret from her son had been slowly breaking over the past month. She hadn't known how long she could hold on for.

"She told you about Adam," Tasha realized aloud, looking at her son with sympathy.

The reaction to her words was not what she expected to see, however.

"What about Adam?" Leo asked suspiciously, sitting up a little straighter in his bed.

Tasha was a smart and independent woman, but she couldn't have seen it coming.

"Well, how they've been dating and she was too scared to tell. . ." Tasha trailed off as she saw the boys face contort into anger and confusion. Apparently, she had been wrong. ". . . you."

Leo shook his head in his frustration. "She lied about everything!" he exclaimed, turning over in his bed again and returning to his former position.

"Leo, Honey. I'm so sorry. She was only scared to tell-"

"And you knew too? And you didn't tell me?" the boy continued, only becoming angrier as he turned to look at his mom. "You're supposed to be my mom."
