⚔️🥀After leaving the restaurant I went back home and changed into some clothes suited for sparring. By the time I arrived at the spot we were supposed to meet the sun hadn't yet set. I looked around, but no one was here yet. After waiting for a few minutes, a young lady arrived. Her hair was in a bun, under a fencing mask, and the fencing mask she wore covered her face, like Menthe said it would. Her clothes were nothing extravagant or out of the ordinary, just a plain fencing uniform. She greeted me and we began sparring. Her moves were aggressive but elegant, ones you'd taught at a fencing school for ladies. They were awfully similar to the way Navia used to spar.
Me and Navia used to spar. We both attended an all girls school and were on the fencing team. I was the best on the team. Not many girls had managed to beat me in a duel, including Navia. Navia wasn't greatest, and she didn't like the sport much; but she stayed in the team for me. She was my biggest supporter, and she swore one day she would finally win against me. That day still hasn't come.My moves got sloppier as I thought more about Navia, but still sharp enough to keep up with my partner. At some point I slipped up and the girl managed to get a scratch on me.
"What's wrong? You seem distracted." The voice muffled under her mask.
"Your fighting style is awfully similar to a friend of mine. I just got distracted thinking of them." I dusted off my clothes and went back to sparring stance.
She gave me a quick nod and our duel continued.
After a few rounds the sun had already set and it was dusk, almost twilight. Out of every round we had, not a single one was won by my opponent. Her moves weren't bad at all, but far too delicate. Usually instructors for females tell you to still be "lady-like" while fencing, but that simply ruins the technique. Is it possible to be "lady-like?" Yes, but their standards are far too high and are much more effort. After I started practicing by myself I realized not everything I do has to be "lady-like." All girls school was truly the worst place for a mindset like mine. There everything you do must be lady-like and elegant. I got sick of the stereotypes and started being less "lady-like" while sparring. Look where I am now.
Those were the main points I covered while giving feedback to the girl .
It was hard to tell her expressions, but she sounded slightly upset. Maybe not at my words, but at herself? Either way I could sense she was smiling when she thanked me.
She seems like a nice girl.
I offered to walk her home as it was dark and dangerous, something could attack her on her way home. But she assured me she'd be fine and left.As for me, I stayed a little longer. I sat in a nearby rock that was close to a cliff. The sun had already set, but dusk still looked beautiful from up here. My thoughts wandered back to my old fencing team in junior high. Navia hated fencing so much, but she loved sparring against me because she knew I loved sparring. She stayed on the team for me up until we graduated. How could I do that to her? After some much she's done for me... I mean it is my job, but... The guilt is eating me alive.
