-chapter twenty-

LAYLA SAT IN HER SEAT AS SHE AWAITED FOR ROLL CALL TO BEGIN.

"Good morning, today is going to be a tough one." Layla turned her head noticing Celina deep in thought as she kept her head down.

"Heat wave has maxed out the power grid. Expect more citywide rolling blackouts." He paused turning to the rookies. "Officer Juarez, what's the acronym that best applies to heat waves?"

He turned around picking up the chalk as he waited for her answer. Layla turning to look at her friend. They had gone over it in the locker room.

Layla kicked her seat Celina looking to her alarmed. "Oh."

Layla mouthed the word 'cheap' to her not wanting her to get caught as Celina looked at her worriedly as she tried her best to guess what she was mouthing at her. "Uh, cheetah?"

Celina paused ignoring the look Layla gave her before she spoke. "I'm sorry sir, I'm having a blackout of my own."

Wade paused shaking his head. "See me after."

"Yes sir." Layla could hear Thatcher say from the back of the room.

"Officer Hicks?" Grey spoke turning to her. "I'll ask you the same question, but please don't give me another animal."

Layla paused nodding. "Cheap."

Grey nodded writing the word on the board before turning back towards her. "Thank you, now tell me what it stands for."

Layla nodded once more before she began listing off the term. "C, check the vulnerable check your partner. H, hydrate. E, eat light meals. A, avoid prolonged sun and lastly. P, Pace yourself."

Grey gave her a small smile before turning back to the board. "Couldn't have said it better myself officer Hicks."

Layla turned to look at Celina mouthing a sorry as Celina shook her head.

"Make smart choices today. Heat equals more violence, blackouts equal more theft." Layla looked out the window watching her boyfriend complete even more paperwork before she sighed.

"It's going to be a busy day today. So pace yourself. Good luck out there today."

Layla got up from her seat placing a hand to Celina's shoulder. "Good luck."
