Emilia's POV:
"But Mommy, I don't want any French lessons anymore! I'm already fluent in French!" I whined as my mom gave me a stern look. I knew from that look that I needed to stop talking. "That is no way to act, young lady!" My mom said. I nodded and just walked outside. I lived in a beautiful house by the lake. Whenever I argued with my mom, I would sit outside on the deck of the lake, read a book, and watch the sunset. I loved the sunset, especially after a day of swimming with my friends. I sat hugging my knees and watching the sunset. This particular sunset was so beautiful, it almost made me want to cry.
"Emilia, your mother has told me to inform you that it's time for dinner," The maid announced to me, almost frightening me. I got up and went inside to see my parents sitting opposite each other, typical. They always had an arrangement that had to be followed. It never felt like we just lived; it always felt like we were living by a schedule.
"Sit down, dear, we have some news to tell you." she even talked with no emotion, a hint of exhaustion in her voice can be found, though. I sat down, waiting to hear about the news. The maids came out with the dinner and placed a plate in front of us. I unfolded the napkin on my lap and stared at my mom. "You'll finally have a sibling, dear." I looked at my mom in confusion until I understood what she meant. "You're pregnant?" I said loudly and in shock. I've always wanted a sibling to play with, but I never expected my mother to oblige. I got up and hugged her in the process.
I sat back down and looked at my father. He hadn't even sent a glance my mother's way. "Daddy, are you not happy with this news?" Silence. He was too focused on his paper to even give us a second of his precious time. "Daddy?" I called out for him again, and he finally lifted his head up, giving me some of his attention. "Yes, honey?" He said softly, although his eyes were still glued to the paper. "How do you feel about mommy being pregnant?" I asked, and he nodded, finally letting go of the paper for a second.
" It's delightful news! I just hope we get a boy so I can teach him all about how to run a business." Daddy said with a chuckle. My father wasn't a bad dad. In fact, he was a good father when he did have the time to be with us. It's just that he's always busy working. I would've taken offense to what my dad had said, but I truly do not care for anything business-related. Daddy tried to teach me about stocks once, and I ended up running out of his office. I got too bored and didn't want to listen anymore.
"So where are we going this summer, Daddy?" I asked as I dug my knife into my steak. Daddy had put down his paper and continued the conversation. "Well, I have too much work to do this summer, so your mom and I agreed to stay in the beach house this summer. That way, I could work and still be able to spend some time with my beloved wife and my beautiful daughter!"
"But, Daddy, we didn't get to go anywhere last summer either. You promised we'd go to Paris next summer!" I whined, and my mother gave me the same stern look as before. I didn't feel like I was being unreasonable. "Emy, dear, you love the beach house. You have to learn how to be grateful for what you have." She tried consoling me, but I huffed angrily and ran upstairs to my room, slamming the door behind me.
A while had passed and I heard a knock at my bedroom door. "I don't want to talk right now." I do agree that I'm a little spoiled, but it is only because that is how I was raised. I heard the door swing open with my furious mom standing there. "I do not care how upset or angry any of us are; we never leave the dinner with food on the table. That is the most important rule of dinner." I could tell my mom was furious due to her slamming the door shut behind her and sitting on the bed. She laid her hand on mine, trying to console me. "You're right; I'm sorry, Mommy."
