A Million Reasons Why Not

When I was little,
a man told my mom she was worthless
And I waited for the day that I'd hear those very same words be spoken to me
I watched as the man broke her down and tore her heart inside out
She told me to go in my room because there were some things a child shouldn't see
I wanted so desperately to take the pain from her
She looked at me and whispered so softly
I saw the tears in her eyes bring her dreams down to a blur
I knew there were a million reasons why not
Why not to fall in love, why not to trust a man whose words were spoken like silk
Why would a girl ever want her heart broken?
Why would a girl ever want to see her mother bleed
And have nothing else to do but wipe her eyes with her sleeves?
There are a million reasons why not to take that leap into the waterfall
Because you can drown in your own hopes and dreams
Only to realize that you are a fiend for fairytale endings
Never to open your eyes and see the devastating reality.
