Ethan was jolted awake by the sharp sound of his dad's voice echoing through the house. He rubbed his eyes, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep as he listened to the heated conversation downstairs.
"I told you, I'll pay it when I can!" his dad yelled into the phone, frustration lacing every word. "I just need a little more time. This is ridiculous!"
Ethan sighed, the familiar knot of anxiety tightening in his stomach. He got out of bed and quickly dressed, knowing that his dad's temper was only going to escalate. As he made his way downstairs, he could hear the conversation getting more intense.
"I don't care what your policy is! I'm doing the best I can!" his dad shouted, slamming the phone down with a force that made Ethan wince.
Ethan reached the bottom of the stairs just in time to see his dad grab his coat and storm towards the door. He stayed hidden, peeking around the corner as his dad muttered to himself, grabbing his keys and heading out without noticing Ethan.
The door slammed shut, leaving a heavy silence in its wake. Ethan stood there for a moment, feeling a mix of worry and helplessness. He knew his dad was struggling, but he didn't know how to help.
Determined to make the best of the day, Ethan grabbed his backpack and headed out the door. He had his own battles to face at school.
As he walked to school, his dad's struggles weighed heavily on his mind.He couldn't stand to see his father so broken, and he was determined to do whatever he could to ease the burden.
Ethan walked through the school gates, his mind still preoccupied with thoughts of his dad. He made his way to his first-period health class, hoping that focusing on schoolwork might help distract him from the worries at home.
As he entered the classroom, he noticed a new face at the front of the room. Mrs. Thompson, the new health teacher, was busy organizing her desk. Ethan recognized her immediately—he had seen her photo on Haley's walls inside their new home while helping them move. This was the first time he would interact with her in person.
Mrs. Thompson looked up and smiled warmly as the students filed in. "Good morning, everyone! I'm Mrs. Thompson, your new health teacher. I know some of you might already know me as Haley's mom, but in this classroom, I'm just your teacher."
Ethan found a seat near the back and tried to shake off his nerves. He wasn't sure how he felt about having Haley's mom as a teacher, but he decided to give her a chance.
Mrs. Thompson began the class with a brief introduction about herself and her background in health education. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and soon, Ethan found himself getting drawn into the lesson. She had a way of making the material interesting and relevant, which helped Ethan forget about his worries, at least for a little while.
As the class progressed, Mrs. Thompson encouraged the students to participate in discussions and ask questions. Ethan appreciated her approachable demeanor and genuine interest in their learning.
By the end of the period, Ethan felt a little more at ease. Meeting Mrs. Thompson had been a pleasant surprise, and he was starting to think that maybe this class wouldn't be so bad after all.
Ethan walked out of health class, feeling a bit lighter. He made his way to his next class, P.E., weaving through the crowded hallways. As he approached the gym, he saw Haley walking toward the girls' locker room. She looked focused, her hair bouncing slightly with each step.
He didn't approach her; instead, he just admired her from a distance. There was something about the way she carried herself that always caught his eye. Ethan smiled to himself and then turned to head into the boys' locker room.
Inside, the usual chatter and laughter filled the air. Ethan found his locker and started changing into his gym clothes, his mind still on Haley. He wondered if she had noticed him earlier in health class and what she thought about her mom being their new teacher.
Shaking off his thoughts, Ethan finished changing and headed out to the gym. The coach was already there, setting up for today's activities. Ethan took a deep breath, ready to focus on the game and let the worries of the morning melt away.
Ethan joined the rest of his classmates in the gym, where Mr. Fren was already organizing the day's activities. Today was all about teamwork and strategy, with a game of basketball on the agenda. Ethan felt a surge of excitement; he loved basketball and it was a great way to clear his mind.
As the game started, Ethan found himself fully immersed in the action. He dribbled, passed, and shot the ball with precision, his earlier worries fading with each play. His teammates cheered him on, and for a moment, everything felt right.
Meanwhile, Haley was in the girls' locker room, getting ready for her own P.E. class. She tied her sneakers tightly and adjusted her ponytail, feeling a mix of determination and curiosity. She wondered how Ethan was doing and whether they would cross paths again today.
Back in the gym, Ethan's team won the game, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. As they lined up to shake hands with the opposing team, he caught a glimpse of Haley walking out of the locker room. Their eyes met briefly, and Ethan felt a spark of connection.
