As the rain continued to pour, Ethan and Haley worked together to carry the last few boxes into the house. Mr. Thompson, noticing their effort, decided to take a break and join them inside.
Once they were all settled, Mr. Thompson turned to Ethan with a warm smile. "Ethan, thank you for your help tonight. It's not easy moving in this weather."
Ethan shrugged, trying to downplay his good deed. "No problem, Mr. Thompson. I saw you guys struggling and figured you could use an extra hand."
Mr. Thompson nodded appreciatively. "We definitely did. By the way, how long have you lived in this neighborhood?"
Ethan thought for a moment. "Pretty much my whole life. It's a quiet area, but there's a lot to like about it."
"That's good to hear," Mr. Thompson said, looking around the room thoughtfully. "We're new here, so any tips on the area would be really helpful."
Ethan smiled, feeling a sense of pride in his hometown. "Well, there's a great park just a few blocks away. It's perfect for a walk or a picnic. And if you're into sports, the community center has some pretty good facilities."
Haley chimed in, her eyes lighting up. "I've heard there's a farmers' market on weekends. Is that true?"
"Yeah, it's one of the best parts of living here," Ethan confirmed. "Fresh produce, homemade goods, and sometimes even live music. It's definitely worth checking out."
Mr. Thompson seemed to relax a bit, his earlier stress melting away. "Sounds like a wonderful place. Thank you, Ethan. It's good to know we made the right choice moving here."
Ethan felt a sense of accomplishment, not just for helping with the move but also for making his new neighbors feel welcome. "Anytime, Mr. Thompson. If you need anything else, just let me know."
As they continued to chat, Ethan felt a growing connection with the Thompsons. Despite the rain and the earlier tension with his dad, he realized that tonight had turned out to be a good night after all.
As Ethan bid farewell to the Thompsons, Haley insisted on walking him out despite the rain still drizzling down. "Thanks for helping us move, Ethan. You're a lifesaver," she said with a grateful smile.Ethan waved off her thanks, feeling a bit bashful. "No problem, Haley. Happy to help out."
Once outside, Ethan made his way back across the street, the rain now just a gentle patter he snuck up to the front of the house, he found his bedroom window still slightly ajar, a perfect entrance back into his room.
Cautiously climbing through the window, Ethan landed in his room, the familiar scent of his own space comforting him. He tiptoed downstairs, hoping to grab a snack before heading to bed.
However, as he reached the living room, a sight stopped him in his tracks. His dad, usually the picture of strength and stability, was slumped over on the couch, empty bottles scattered around him. The TV blared loudly, the light casting a harsh glow on his father's sleeping form.
Ethan's heart sank as he realized the extent of his dad's drinking problem. The weight of the situation settled heavily on his shoulders, a mix of anger, sadness, and disappointment swirling inside him.
He walked over to his dad and gently shook him, trying to wake him up, but his dad didn't budge. Sighing, Ethan grabbed a blanket from the nearby chair and covered his dad, turning off the TV to let him rest in peace. He then picked up the empty bottles and cleaned up the living room, making it look a bit more presentable.
With a heavy heart, Ethan headed back upstairs to his bedroom. He changed out of his wet clothes and climbed into bed, the events of the night weighing on his mind. As he lay there, staring at the ceiling, thoughts of his mom filled his head. He missed her terribly and wished she were still around to help him navigate these tough times.
Eventually, the emotional exhaustion took over, and Ethan's eyes grew heavy. He drifted off to sleep, the sound of rain tapping against his window, carrying him into a restless slumber filled with memories of better days.
