FAYE KINGSLEY
“Watch where you’re going, bitch. Yoko doesn’t accept apologies easily,” one of her lackeys sneered, her tone dripping with malice.
Another lackey, a boy with a cruel grin, stepped up, shoving Maris in the chest. “I know you, class president, right? But you’re so clumsy. Do you even deserve to be a class representative?”
I couldn’t stand the insults. Stepping forward, I felt Maris grip my arm. “Fayeton, Yoko’s group is influential. It’s not worth it, I’m okay,” she whispered, forcing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
Ignoring her plea, I faced Yoko’s group. “Maris already apologized. It was an accident, and she’s just as soaked as your friend. Let’s not blow this out of proportion.”
One of the boys in Yoko’s group stepped forward, “Who do you think you are, purple necktie? Do you know who you’re talking to?”
“I’m just stating the facts,” I replied, my voice steady despite the rising tension.
“Pfft, stating the facts?” one of Yoko’s female friends snorted, flipping her hair dismissively. “You must be new if you think you can talk to us like that.”
The air was thick with hostility. Eliana and Stephanie moved closer, ready to back me up if things got out of hand.
“Enough,” Yoko finally spoke, her voice icy and commanding. Her gaze locked onto mine, and I felt a shiver run down my spine. “Leave them alone.”
“Listen to Yoko, guys,” Maris said, her voice shaky but determined. “We don’t want any trouble.”
But Yoko’s group wasn’t backing down. One of the boys stepped even closer, his breath hot on my face. “You think you’re tough, newbie? Let’s see how tough you are.”
I stood my ground, my heart pounding in my chest. “I don’t want to fight, but I won’t back down from a bully.”
I heard faint murmurs around me. What's their problem?
"Oh my god, he's so cool."
"He's the only one brave enough to face Yoko's lackeys. He's like a knight in shining armor, oh my god!"
"Good luck to him and his group. Yoko's crew are total jerks."
"What's my type? that Fayeton guy!"
"That's a man I like!"
Suddenly, one of Yoko’s lackeys lunged at me, fist aimed at my face. I dodged just in time, but unfortunately I didn't dodged the next one, and the cafeteria erupted into chaos. Students screamed and scrambled to get out of the way.
“Watch out!” Stephanie shouted, blocking another attack from one of the girls.
Eliana was fending off two of Yoko’s male friends, her movements quick and precise. “This is insane! We’re gonna get expelled on the first day!”
I landed a punch on my attacker, sending him stumbling back. “Enough! This isn’t worth it!” I shouted, trying to make my voice heard over the din. But another boy grabbed my collar, yanking me close.
We locked eyes, and I couldn’t help but smirk at the bruise forming on his cheek. Before things could get any worse, a loud whistle pierced the air. “What’s going on here?!” a booming voice demanded. It was Mr. Thompson, one of the academy’s senior staff members, storming into the cafeteria.
Everyone froze. Yoko’s group stepped back, trying to look innocent. “Uh, nothing, sir. Just getting to know the new students,” one of them said, attempting to hide the bruise on his face.
