A/N: So yes, after all this time...this is indeed the last chapter. I'll save my parting sentiments for the end of it, but, for those of you who thought I was lying when I said this chapter would make you happy... y'all are about to be proved very, very wrong. Enjoy ;)
Arthur sits bolt upright in his bed, drawing in a shuddering gasp as beads of sweat roll down his face. He blinks several times, his heart hammering against his ribcage. He looks around his chambers. Sunlight leaked in through the gaps in his curtains. A pile of dirty laundry lay in the corner of the room in a basket.
A dream.
It had all been a dream.
Arthur slumps backwards into his pillows with a moan of relief, throwing his arm over his face for a moment. Just a stupid, horrible, awful dream.
He takes several calming breaths. Everything was alright. Merlin was alive. He was still Prince. His father - Merlin.
Arthur practically jumps out of bed, scrambling to pull on his shirt as he races across the floor of his chambers, not even bothering with shoes. He throws the door open and races down the corridors, elated.
He doesn't stop until he's reached the physician's chambers, and doesn't knock before barging in. Luckily, Gaius is no where in sight. Arthur looks around for a sign of Merlin, and catches sight of a disheveled head of dark hair sitting up blearily in the bed in the small room adjoined to the main room. Without thinking, he crosses the floor and enters Merlin's room, much to the surprise of the unsuspecting servant.
Merlin nearly jumps out of his skin as Arthur comes rushing in to his bedroom. "Arthur!" He yelps, nearly falling out of his bed. He'd just woken up, and Arthur was the last person he expected to see at the moment.
An overwhelming rush of relief and affection overcomes Arthur and he moves forward, lifting Merlin out of his bed and hugging him tightly, burying his nose in his dark hair. "Thank god..." he whispers.
"Uh, A-Arthur...??" Merlin stammers, feeling his cheeks grow warm as Arthur unexpectedly hugs him. He slowly and hesitantly pats Arthur on the back. "Is everything alright...?" He asks cautiously.
Arthur pulls back, taking Merlin's hands in his own and lacing their fingers together. "I love you, Merlin," he says quite simply, ignoring the shock and surprise that crosses Merlin's face. "And it took a dream of me having you die in my arms to realize that, but I know it now. I love you."
Merlin swears his heart stops, swelling nearly five times its normal size. Since when had Arthur liked him back?! Merlin had spent years dreaming of the Prince, never thinking for a moment that the prat might return his affections. A delighted smile spreads across Merlin's face and he mutters, "Took you long enough, you dollophead." before raising up and pressing his lips to Arthur's.
