Tonight was like any other night. Calm, mostly quiet. Except for the occasional sounds of the city. Sirens, dogs barking, people shouting. It was a normal evening in Gotham. Aside the fact that it was Halloween. It was nearing midnight by now, and the trick-or-treaters were long gone, the hallways empty and eerily quiet in the apartment complex.
Melody was laid up on the couch in her living room, scrolling through the channels on her TV when her cell phone rang in her pocket. She took it out, glancing at the screen to see that it was Barbara.
What on earth was she still doing up this late?
"Hey Barb! What's got-"
"Have you watched the nightly news?" Barbara asked quite loudly on the other end of the phone, causing Melody to flinch slightly at the sudden volume of her friend's voice.
"No, why?"
"Change the channel to it now. You're gonna want to see this."
Melody snatched the remote up off of the couch cushion beside her from where she had laid it down a moment ago to answer the phone and began to flip through the channels until she came across Gotham News. Her jaw hung open at the clip showing.
SUSPECTED CHEMICAL WEAPON ATTACK IN GOTHAM DINER. EYEWITNESSES REPORT THAT PATRONS WERE "TEARING EACH OTHER TO PEICES."
Seriously? She took one night off of patrol, and this happened.
"Did you see it?" Barbara asked, her voice on the phone ringing out in the empty apartment. Melody nodded, almost forgetting that her friend couldn't see her.
"Yeah, yeah I saw it. What-" Before she could finish her thought, a loud booming voice echoed outside. Furrowing her brows, Melody stood up and wandered over to the window in the living room. Her eyes widened when she saw the figure of none other than Scarecrow, his frightening appearance appearing across multiple of the electronic billboards across the city.
"This demonstration used just five ounces of my latest toxin. Tomorrow, this will seem like child's play. Gotham, this is your only warning."
The screens seemed to glitch before turning back to normal, and the people in the streets went to screaming in sheer terror.
Melody brought her phone back up to her face, her heart hammering in her chest.
"Not good Babs. Not good..."
Later that evening, civilians started evacuating the city. By vehicle, public transportation, or even on foot. Everyone wanted out. Well, most people at least. By dawn, Gotham was nearly empty. The ones that stayed behind were thugs, the kind of people that enjoyed chaos. And worse.
"We can't seem to catch a break, can we?" Barbara asked, rolling her wheelchair over to the control panel for the Batcomputer in the clocktower.
"In Gotham, there are no such things as 'breaks' I'm afraid. Especially if you're a masked vigilante..." Melody muttered, securing her utility belt around her waist and pressing the button on the side of her mask to conceal her identity.
AN: This is Melody's outfit inspo! Her mask is inspired by Nightwing's in Young Justice!
