I first dreamed up Heartstrings three or four years ago, and now I'm finishing the first draft. This story means everything to me, and I'm so glad you shared it.
This ending note's purpose is to answer some questions you may have:
Why did Nina try to ruin Tony and Kennedy's wedding?
Bitterness. Nina's love for Reid was self-indulgent. When she found out at the start of the wedding that Reid and Mallory reconnected, she used her last piece of ammunition to bring Reid down. She was a scorned lover, if you will. Nina didn't intend to ruin the wedding. She wanted to ruin Reid's last chance at peace.
What was the meaning behind In Memoriam?
My aim with this story was to represent different types of love, exemplified in each character's attachment.
Mallory and Reid represented doomed, binding love. Nina and Reid represented jealous, self-sufficient love. Tony and Nina were unrequited, one-sided love. Cleo and Nina were forbidden love. Tony and Kennedy were untainted, honeymoon-like love. Nick's love for Mallory was self-sacrificing.
Why was the title In Memoriam? 'In Memoriam' is a common Latin phrase found in obituaries, used typically to mourn a loved one. This story's primary plot was the death of Mallory and Reid's high school-circa-college relationship, so I thought the title was fitting and poetic.
What does the final chapter mean?
Reid overcame his issues with Nina's revelation in the final year of Heartstrings, which is shortly depicted in Mallory and Reid's short and final encounter; which Cleo orchestrated. When Mallory finds Reid in the epilogue, their opportunity to safely reconnect is finally present without any external pressures. They always loved each other, but the circumstances were never right before. That is my personal belief.
Where did Brent go?
Brent was obsessive about Mallory for the entirety of their relationship, but he never actually cared about her. When he showed up at Cleo's apartment after Reid's accident, it was to scare Mallory. Once he got what he wanted, his interest faded. He was a manipulator, end of.
