I walked down the dusty road towards the orphanage again. Somehow that idiot never got the hint. I kicked a rock as I walked, watching as it bounced down the road. It should be hours before he noticed I was missing again. I heard the clomping of horse's hooves behind me and quickly moved off into the bushes. I hid behind the shrubs, muffling my hiss as a sharp thorn pricked me.
A strange carriage rolled past kicking up clouds of dust. It was as black as a cloudy night with bright silver detailing. When I caught a glance at the crest on the door, I gasped out loud, then coughed as I choked on dust. What was the Dragon King doing here? There was only one thing he could be looking for down this road.
I watched as the carriage went around the bend and then jumped up, glancing down the road. There was no way I could get past him going down the road. I sighed and looked down at the dress I was wearing.
"There goes another nice dress," I muttered. I took off running through the trees and trying to avoid as much of the prickly vines and bushes as I could.
When I finally tumbled out of the forest and into the orphanage yard, my skirt was torn with pieces trailing behind me. Darn that dress getting caught so easily otherwise I would have been here faster. I glanced around the yard and caught sight of my favorite little friends.
"Sis, you're back," little Eleanor called.
I ran to scoop her up in my arms, "I missed you, little princess."
I looked to Spencer standing not far behind, "Hey, Spence, thanks for protecting our little princess while I was gone."
Spence pointed to the briars clinging to my skirt, "I went to all that work to protect Ellie and you didn't even bring back any berries for me?!"
I glanced at the road leading up to the orphanage and when no carriage appeared I glanced back. Immediately I noticed the worried look on Spencer's face.
"It's not Lord Doofus," I said, rolling my eyes, "it's the Dragon King."
"You saw the Dragon King?" Spencer's eyes were wide.
"No, I saw his carriage and if we don't hurry, he'll spot us out here."
Spencer immediately started moving towards the orphanage and I quickly caught up to him, just as I caught a glance of a carriage speeding up the drive. Another quick glance assured me it wasn't the Dragon King but didn't exactly inspire ease either. Lord Doofus was here, or as I should be calling him, Lord Duncan, my master.
