"Is this what orphanages have become," a deep voice asked from the doorway, "places where children are beaten?"

"No, no, my lord," Mr. Robbins said, "This servant escaped from her master and came here. Her master is teaching her a lesson. I can line the others outside for you."

I saw Lord Duncan's hand rising for another strike, so I wrestled free from his servant's grasp and rolled away. I caught a look at the man standing at the door as I ducked behind a half shelf. The man wore dark robes with silver threads. The Dragon King. A hood covered his face, but I caught a glimpse of his piercing gray eyes.

"Catch that little ruffian," Lord Duncan bellowed to his servant and I scrambled back to my senses.

I ran along the little half wall that separated the entryway from the school room, keeping tucked low. I got to the end of the wall and I glanced back before darting out towards the door. A hand caught my arm, and I twisted, breaking free but tumbling to the floor. My head hit the floor, and I saw stars for a moment as I tried to scramble back up. A foot pressed into my back and pinned me to the floor. I looked up to see the Dragon King's robes hanging in front of me. Drat it all. The foot on my back released and I was yanked to my feet and turned around. Lord Duncan raised his hand to slap me again, but as he struck, I yanked myself out of his grasp and surprisingly a hand caught his wrist. I tumbled back off balance and stumbled into something solid. An arm wrapped around my waist, steadying me. My whole body tensed, and I looked up.

"Blast," I muttered.

The Dragon King glanced down at me, and I quickly averted my gaze. Then I realized I was still in the Dragon King's arms, and I quickly pulled away.
