I ducked through the back door of the orphanage, catching the door so as not to make a sound. Not that it would have mattered since the headmaster, Mr. Robbins would be in his office at this time of day. I set Eleanor down and we snuck to the kitchen and grabbed some rolls. We started munching as we headed to the back stairs. The front door of the orphanage slammed loudly enough that we could hear it, and shouting echoed from the front. I winced as I heard the sound of something crashing and breaking on the floor. I tossed Spencer the rest of my roll and gave Eleanor the extra I held in my hand.

"You better go, while I go deal with that," I said motioning down, towards the front of the orphanage, "Take care of Ellie for me."

Spencer gave me a little salute and the two little ones headed off. They may not have been my biological siblings, but I treated them like it, and it was best if my master never found that out. I sighed and put a smile on my face as I headed towards the noise. I walked into the entryway and grinned a real grin as I saw the furious look on Lord Duncan's face. Mr. Robbins stood in front of Lord Duncan twisting his hands.

"I don't know where she is," Mr. Robbins was saying, "She hasn't come back here, at least not yet."

"I know where she is," I called out, "At least I know if it's me you're looking for."

Mr. Robbins turned and then glanced between me and Lord Duncan, "It seems she has been found, my lord."

Lord Duncan glared at me before turning back to Mr. Robbins, "I do believe you told me she wasn't here. Were you lying to me? Were you hiding her from me again?"

Mr. Robbins dropped to the floor, "I didn't know she was here, my lord, please spare me, my lord."

I shook my head at the show. It was almost as if we hadn't been in this situation several times before. Lord Duncan would bluster and threaten Mr. Robbins, who would beg and grovel. Eventually I would be dragged back to Lord Duncan's mansion where the housekeeper would beat me and then I would go back to mopping and cleaning. It wasn't terrible, otherwise I wouldn't ever go back, but it wasn't what I wanted to do with my life.

"I only just got here," I said casually.

Lord Duncan glared at me, as usual, "I wasn't asking you, filthy girl."

Mr. Robbins motioned to me, "Get back here girl. And remember to respect your superiors."

I took a step forward and caught a glance out one of the front windows. The Dragon King's carriage was pulling up. I would have to hurry this play on.

"Ok, I get it," I muttered, "Fine. I'll come back again."

"What did you say?!" Lord Duncan asked.

"I said fine, I'll come back," I snapped, then added, "my lord."

A vase shattered at my feet and I looked up into Lord Duncan's eyes. Oh, he was furious. I don't think I've ever made him that angry before. In a moment, he stood in front of me, robes billowing out as he came to a stop. His servant grabbed me from behind and held me in place. I held my breath as Lord Duncan leaned closer to me.

"What did you say?!" he asked again.

"Nothing, my lord," I said.

The servant shoved me to the floor, and I felt porcelain shards cut into my knees and hands. I caught a glance of light as the door opened and a hand struck me. I tasted blood and realized I had bit my tongue. I took a deep breath and tried to calm my anger. Now was not the time. I have to stick to the plan.
