The road was pretty long, and it was also a pain in the ass for you to remember where to go in the night. The fact you spent most of your time on those roads on foot didn't help. However, by now, after years of survival with little to no maps, you realized that you were able to find your way back even on roads you hadn't been on for days, in the night. It felt like if in the back of your mind, some stored points of interets, buildings, signs or terrain came flashing for you to guide your way. It was almost on pure instinct.
It took you something around two hours and a half of driving to suddenly recognize the valley, and figure out you were about two miles away from the cannibal house. You told Ray you were close, and he stopped the van by the road, turning off the lights and engine. For a few seconds, everyone remained silent, the breathing of the guys feeling and sounding heavy.
- So, should we drop off here ? he asked.
- I think it's best, yeah, you agreed with a nod. I have no idea how far they could hear the van from, or see the headlights.
Ray hummed, then turned around and looked at his men before making some hand sign you didn't see. You heard the doors all open one by one, the hinges and seats creaking, and then a bunch of thuds outside as the men jumped off and their boots crushed the leaves on the ground. Then, the doors slammed shut, leaving just you and Ray inside the car.
With a grunt, he bent over and searched through his backpack he put between his legs, then grabbed some black rectangular thing he handed to you. You took it, and after feeling it for a bit in the darkness and adjusting your vision, you came to the conclusion it was a walkie talkie.
- The channel's number four, he stated while turning another radio on. If you change it by accident, use the little buttons on the right side. (He pointed at you the buttons.) To turn it on and off, use that switch at the bottom, and to speak use the big button on the left side. You got it ?
- Yeah, I do.
- Let's test it out then.
He climbed out of the van, then walked around twenty yards down the road with his mates. He stopped, and you heard your walkie talkie sizzle before his voice emerged from the speaker.
- Do you copy ? he asked through the walkie talkie.
The voice sounded a little bit saturated, but overall it was great. You squinted to try and see through the windshield where they were, but their shadows had already disappeared in the night. The moon was completely hidden by clouds, which is probably the best weather for an assault on a house.
- Loud and clear, you replied while having no idea if that was an appropriate tactical answer or if it sounded a little bit laughable and too much.
- Great, he added after a little while. Those bad boys have an eight kilometer range, or so the box said. So, maybe five or six miles, I'm not sure. There could be some trouble with the trees and terrain, though. I'll radio check you every ten minutes, so stay sharp.
- I got you. Tell me when you're in position, and if you ever need directions.
- We should be fine. (He cleared his throat.) I left you a spare gun under the driver seat, he added. Just in case.
You did some gymnastics above the gear shift to sit on the driver seat, then started to blindly pat the mat at your feet and searched under the seat. Your fingers eventually came into contact with some cold metal, and you pulled out the gun from under there. It was a revolver, most likely a .357 Magnum, but you couldn't really see nor make out the model in the dark.
- Yeah, I got it, you told Ray on the radio.
- Great. We're gonna head out, be ready to drive off any second. Who knows what kind of attention we dragged driving at night. (He paused a bit.) Do you want one of the guys to stay with you ?
