When Ranboo opened his eyes and crawled out of bed, blinking heavily against the sunlight that forced it's way through his windows, he took a deep breath. It was a warm and sunny day and he was ready to leave the tiny house he had made to be save from the creatures of the night for just long enough to get some equipment.
On his first day he met Niki and talked to her a little. Her happiness and the sound of hope in her voice, whenever she spoke about the city Tubbo and Tommy would built, had made him more and more optimistic.
This was perfect! He finally had a chance to make friends without loosing all his memories and doing terrible things he did not even know about. There would finally be calmness in his mind, not fear and confusion! He closed his eyes for a second to take in the sounds of the forest. Birds sang around him, a soft breeze tossed around small leaves on the ground.
"Yep, we made it. We are finally alone", he sighed, his voice full of relief.
"Yes we are", whispered a gentle voice somewhere in his head, so quiet it was hard to notice. So gentle it might have been the wind passing by or the low rumble of the river in the distance. Almost unnoticeable.
But Ranboo had heard it and his heart pounded against his chest.
"No...no that can't be. You...you can't be still here! This is a new world, everything from the old world is gone besides the memories! Even memories are complete! I...you...that must have been my imagination! I am so used to this, so used to hearing someone answer questions I had no one to ask! I am alone!"
His voice grew louder and started shaking while he grabbed his head with his bare hands and kept his eyes closed.
There was no answer anymore. He stood alone in the forest, starting to doubt what he just had heard. Was it just imagination? Was it the fear within him that played games with his mind?
The longer he waited for an answer, the more it confused him. There was a second voice, right? The silence made him look like a fool.Taking a deep breath he opened his eyes and stretched his arms, trying to shove away the panic he felt for a brief moment. Focusing on the ground below him, he walked through the forest towards the lake, where Tommy and Tubbo were building thw city. He needed to talk to someone!
"Are You okay, mate?"
"I, yes, no, no actually, not really. Hello Phil."
"Hey mate, what's wrong?"
Phil had been a good friend to him in the past and a lot of people trusted him. They had met right before Ranboo could enter the city through a newly built gate out of stone and wood.
"It's...kind of hard to explain", Ranboo stumbled and looked away. Where should he start?
"Just try, if you wan't to? Or do you not want to talk about it?" Philzas friendly smiled forced Ranboo smile back shyly, before he sighed. "I do want to talk about it but maybe...not here? I don't everyone needs to hear this."Without askin any more questions Phil led his younger friend to a little hill close by and sat in the grass. Slowly Ranboo did the same, thinking about what he wanted to say.
Looking at Phil's hat, his friendly eyes and the comforting smile below them, he started explaining: "I don't think, everything from the past is gone. I...I still have my memories, which is good, but I think, I. Earlier I was in the forest all by myself. And I spoke to myself about how we finally were alone and then I heard something. A voice that answered me and it was not my voice! But there was no one there, Phil! I promise I was alone, I am just...scared that I still can hear it and that everything will be just like it was before. What if I don't remember half the things I do? Should I make a new memory book? Honestly, I am not even sure if there was a voice, maybe I am just going crazy."
Ranboo was desperate to convince himself that what he was heard was non excistent but Phil's expression was serious now.
"What you heard, did you recignize the voice that spoke?", he asked, curious to get some more information. He did not believe that Ranboo was imagining voices, even though there was a chance he was.
Shrugging his shoulders Ranboo took another deep breath to calm himself down.
"No, I did not. It was very quiet somehow, it sounded like it was far away and merely a whisper. I am not sure if it was, well, Dreams voice. But who else could I hear?"
"I don't know. However, I saw Dream in the middle of the city, Newgate is what they named it by the way, crafting stone bricks for the gate you saw. Do you know if he needs to do something to make you hear him?"
Dream was in the city? Maybe Ranboo should not have come here at all. Maybe all of this was a very bad idea!
Not saying any of that out loud, he instead answered Phil's question by shaking his head. "No idea."
"Damn, okay. Anyways, don't worry, you won't be alone. You can always come to me an I will help through whatever happens", Phil declared, trying to suppored his scared friend at least a little bit. There was not much they could do now besides to wait.
Ranboo nodded and sighed again. "Thank you, Phil, I apprecciate it."
Standing up he reached his hand down to Ranboo and pulled him into a stand position. "Let's go? Do you want to have a look at Newgate? I made a little house and I got some stakes and potatoes, you can join me for dinner."
Thinking about Phils offer for a second Ranboo decided he was not ready yet. He declined and thanked the older man a couple more times, saying he was sorry. "It's not the right time, I can't meet him yet", he said, speaking about Dream and he was glad Phil accepted his decision again without forcing him to explain it any further.
