Nika awoke to the faint smell of cigarettes wafting in from the balcony that was connected to Cue's room. She blinked a few times, rubbing her eyes as they adjusted to the darkness around her. She could see Cue outside, sitting on a chair, cigarette between her fingers.
Nika pulled on one of Cue's baggy sweatshirts over her otherwise bare upper body and stepped outside into the cold night air, shivering as she did. Cue, hadn't yet noticed her. She leaned against the door jamb, admiring Cue for a moment. The slope of her neck, the way the bone in her jaw defined every time she took a hit, the way the smoke snaked out of her mouth and disappeared into the night air. Nika felt spellbound.
"Post nut clarity?" she joked lightly.
Cue immediately looked up at her and put her cigarette out against the floorboards. "Shit I'm sorry. I couldn't fall asleep and I didn't want to wake you."
Nika walked over to Cue, forgoing the other chair on the balcony and choosing to sit on Cue's lap instead. The detective pulled her closer with her strong arms. Nika glanced her, lips swollen, small markings around her neck and her curly hair pulled into a messy bun. Nika had never seen anyone look as beautiful as Cue Jones did right now.
Nika cupped her face and pulled her in for a sweet kiss, she hadn't gotten used to the feeling and she didn't know if she ever would. Kissing Cue felt like getting the wind knocked out of her in the best way possible. "Hi," Nika said softly as she smiled at Cue once she pulled away, almost shyly.
Sex with Cue had exceeded her expectations. Nika pushed while Cue pulled. The other girl was slightly rough with a gentle edge to her, it was intense give and take and Nika took everything Cue gave her.
"Hi Nika," Cue replied back, eyes sparkling under the moonlight. She seemed almost hesitant, "Was it good for you?"
Nika nodded her head furiously, wanting to subdue any doubts in Cue's mind. "Yes it was," Nika paused to swallow, her voice came out in almost a whisper. "It's never felt like that for me before."
Cue gave her a gentle smile, she looked relieved. "Yea, me too. I've never been this intimate before."
Nika leaned back from her, "You've had sex before though, plenty of times right?" She asked remembering the never have I ever game at Cue's birthday.
"Yea but it's never been this intimate, sex and intimacy are two very different things."
Nika nodded, understanding Cue's words, she felt like giddy little kid now. "What are you out here thinking about?" She questioned softly.
"Everything and nothing at the same time," Cue responded looking deep into Nika's eyes. She still found herself getting nervous whenever she did that.
"You wanna enlighten me?"
Cue cleared her throat before she started, "You know I never wanted to be a cop growing up."
Nika rested her arm on Cue's shoulder, shifting to get more comfortable on her lap. "What'd you wanna be?"
Cue glanced down briefly, "I wanted to be a basketball player. There was a time where I loved basketball more anything else in the world, I put my heart and soul into it. By the time I was 16 I had ten division one offers. I always dreamed of going to school on the West Coast and ending up somewhere out there. Maybe it California, maybe Washington, I hear Seattle's nice. Anyways it doesn't matter, I got arrested and lost it all and I had to give up my dreams."
Nika felt a lump in her throat, it must burn Cue to watch Azzi live out her dreams while she couldn't. "I'm sorry that happened to you."
Cue just shrugged, "It's whatever, plus I'm over it now, really. Playing today just reminded me of all of that."
