"girlfriend, huh?"
chapter 05

The day flew by in Carolina's eyes. She was lost in her thoughts while putting the books she didn't need away in her locker. She thought about random things her teachers said, practice later, and a certain curly-haired boy. She smiled slightly at the thought of the boy but was snapped out of it after hearing the slight slam of the locker next to her.

She looked at Jaslene who was looking back at her, "you okay?" Jaslene asked. "Yeah, I'm good, just got lost in thought for a second," Carolina said as she closed her locker and slipped the lock back onto it, securing it with a click.

Jaslene nodded at her response, "you doing anything after school?"

"Yep, I have to manage practice, but I'm going out to eat with Lamine before that." She replied. "Alright, have fun! I have to watch my little brother today." Jaslene said as they began walking to the front of the school, where Lamine was waiting for Carolina.

"Aw, okay! Have fun." Carolina said, hugging the girl and waving as she walked off. She then made her way to walk to where Lamine was standing. "Hey you," She tapped his shoulder. "There she is!," Lamine said, "ready to go?" Carolina nodded, and the pair made their way to his car.

She didn't bother texting Christian and letting him know where she was going, he'd probably be off with a girl. Besides, he knew she'd be busy with practice and Lamine would often take her home afterwards.

The pair got into the car, and the click of seatbelts rang out in the car. Carolina grabbed his phone, too lazy to just connect her phone to the car's Bluetooth. Carolina smiled when she saw his wallpaper, a photo of the both of them in 4th grade.

She put in his password and went to Spotify, choosing the music for their ride. Grabbing each other's phones and using them was a normal thing for the pair to do so Lamine didn't give it any second thought.

When they arrived at the In & Out, Carolina searched through her backpack for her wallet. "Okay, now I'm ready." She said, holding her wallet up. "Come on Lina, you know you don't need that when you're with me," Lamine said, laughing.

"And you know I feel bad because you always pay!" Carolina stated. "You don't need to feel bad. I pay because I want to." He replied, taking the wallet from her hands, "now come on." Carolina sighed knowing she wouldn't win this debate, "fine."

When she closed the door, he reached over the driver's seat and put the wallet back in her bag. Once he finished, they began walking toward the entrance of the building.

He opened the door for her and they walked in together, side by side. They spoke about what they wanted while waiting in line. "Look," Carolina showed him the message from Jaslene. Lamine and Carolina both busted out laughing, getting strange looks from other people in the In & Out.

"I didn't know she had a crush on Marc?" Lamine said. "I'm really surprised you didn't, she's bad at hiding it." Carolina laughed remembering her friend's red face after speaking to him for a class project. "Tell her I'll mention it to him at practice." He said, looking down at Carolina as she typed another message to Jaslene. "She's gonna die," Carolina laughed.

They then walked up to the open register after seeing the person was done ordering and had walked away.

"Hi!, the girl behind the register said. Carolina replied with a "Hey!," while Lamine replied with a simple "Hello." He proceeded to tell the girl their orders and pay for them, much to Carolina's dismay. He never let her pay for anything although she insists.

The pair stood off to the side where they waited for their food, talking about random things again and how they needed to be back to the school soon. Speaking about how Marc was single and they could set him up with Jaslene, Lamine was interrupted by a tap on his shoulder.

He looked behind him, Carolina did as well, to see a girl that looked about their age standing there.

"Hey!" She said with a confident smile on her face. "Hey, what's up?" Lamine said curiously. "Well I saw you from over there," she pointed to a table where girls who Carolina assumed were her friends sat, "and I think you're really cute so I was wondering if I could get your snap?"

"Oh- sorry. I have a girlfriend," Lamine said to the girl. Carolina's eyebrows raised in surprise, trying not to laugh at the girls expression.

"Really? Then where is she, I don't see her." The random girl rolled her eyes.

Without missing a beat, he put his arm around Carolina and pulled her into a side hug, "she's right here." Carolina nearly choked on her own spit. "Hey." She said confidently, wrapping her right arm around his waist with a grin.

The girl scoffed and walked away, leaving the two laughing to themselves. "Girlfriend, huh?" Carolina asked, teasingly. "Don't let it get to your head." He said with a laugh, looking down at her.

Their food was ready a few seconds after the interaction, which they were both grateful for. Carolina held the drinks and Lamine held their food. They took their things and walked out the door, making their way back to his car.

The two best friends got into the car, turned the music on, and snacked on their fries while Lamine drove them back to the school. Carolina smacking his hand whenever she noticed him taking from her fries and not his own, then sharing laughs and smiles after.
