Tessa

I walk inside the apartment, and I find Mia sitting on the couch and drinking some wine.

"Hey, you're back." Mia says as I walk into the apartment.

"Yeah, it's been a crazy day." I reply, sinking into the couch.

"Wine?"

"Yes, please." She gets up, pours some wine in another glass and it hands it to me.

Mia sits next to me, concern etched on her face. "What happened?"

I take a deep breath, recounting the events of the day, from Auden's fever to Alex's unexpected visit.

"Oh my God, Tessa. Are you okay?" Mia asks, her eyes wide with worry.

"I'm trying to be." I admit. "It just feels like no matter how far I run, my past keeps catching up with me."

"You're stronger than you think." Mia says, squeezing my hand. "And you have people who care about you. You're not alone."

Her words bring tears to my eyes, but they're tears of relief. "Thank you, Mia. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You don't have to find out." she says with a smile. "Now, let's figure out what we're going to do about Alex."

We spend the evening discussing plans to keep me safe and how to deal with Alex if he shows up again. It's a tough conversation, but it helps me feel more in control.

As I finally head to bed, I feel a sense of determination. I won't let Alex ruin my new life. With the support of Hardin and Mia, I know I can face whatever comes my way.

The next morning, I wake up early, feeling a bit more rested. Despite the anxiety from yesterday, I'm ready to face the day. I head over to Hardin's house, determined to keep things as normal as possible for Auden.

When I arrive, Hardin greets me at the door, looking relieved to see me. "Morning, Tessa. How are you holding up?"

"I'm okay." I say, forcing a smile. "How's Auden?"

"He's feeling much better. His fever broke overnight." Hardin replies with a smile. "He's still asleep, though."

"Good to hear that." I say, genuinely relieved. "I'll get started on some breakfast. What would you like to eat?"

"I'll just have some coffee and a croissant, thanks anyway."

"Okay... But for Auden?"

"Some omelet is good."

As I move around the kitchen, preparing breakfast, Hardin watches me thoughtfully. "If you need to talk about anything, I'm here." he says gently.

"Thank you." I reply, appreciating his support but not wanting to delve into it right now. "I'll be fine."

Just then, Auden comes toddling into the kitchen, looking much healthier. "Morning, Tessa!" he says brightly.

"Good morning, Auden!" I respond, smiling widely. "How are you feeling?"

"Better!" he chirps, and Hardin helps him to climb onto a chair.

"That's great news." Hardin says, ruffling Auden's hair. "You're a tough little guy."

The day goes by smoothly, with Auden full of energy and laughter. We spend the morning playing games and reading books. Hardin, having taken the day off, joins us for most of it, and it feels like a pleasant family day.

However, the peace is short-lived. Around lunchtime, there's a knock at the door. My heart skips a beat, fearing the worst.

Hardin stands up. "I'll get it."
