I laid in my bunk listening to the rowdy sounds of the others around me. Everyone was assigned a bunk and bunkie. I lucked out with a bunkie who looked to be mostly interested in the samples lab and would be spending her time out of the room. I wasn't going to be going around the ship much. In my mind I was here for one thing and one thing only, serve and get transferred to my brothers ship.
I was one of six other women who had been assigned to this ship. Which wasn't out of the norm, mostly only women wanting a parent document and the ability to do higher up work enlisted. My bunkie was one of those women. She wanted to enlist so she could go into the freedoms lab program. The highest lab you could reach, they developed most if not all medical, special bio weapons, and such that were then distributed out to the fleets.
I let out a sigh as I placed my arms behind my head, just staring off as the sounds continued.
"Hey chase! " A loud male voice boomed in my door way. I turned to see a young man who was big enough to cover the doorway itself. I raised a brow, "And you are??" The young man sheepishly smiled rubbed the back of his head.
"Sorry, I'm Baxter. I was wondering if ya wanna join the rest of us in the mess hall?" His deep blue eyes sparkled as he looked at me, the short almost buzzed black hair was clean edged. Maybe if I wasn't here to advance my career, I'd had invited him in. However, that was another path closed until I got to were I needed.
I shrugged kicking my legs over the bunk, my boots clinking on the floor.
"Sure why not." I followed him as I watched around us the rest of the recruits laughing, chatting and living it up. I envied them, I shouldn't have been so hard on myself, however my dreams were bigger.
"So, first ship?" My head turned as Baxter spoke, I had almost forgotten I was following him.
"Uh yea. Fresh meat for the grinder ya know?" I chuckled and he smiled.
"Well you had me fooled, I would have thought you were a seasoned diver or something how calm you were coming out of cryo. This is my second round to be honest. I asked to be transferred to Captain Brando's ship. He see's the most action to be honest." Baxter smiled smuggly as they ducked and weaved around the others and made there way to the large mess hall.
"Well that's good to know. I'm looking to basically power through for a transfer of my own."
Once entering the mess hall it was even louder as I saw the massive amount of people in it. Baxter stopped and looked at me confused.
"A transfer from here? But why?"
"Personal reasons." I shrugged as I walked past him and grabbed a tray.
"I can respect that, well hopefully we get to go on a few missions before you leave."
I wasn't sure why he was being nice, or even trying to form a friendship. I didn't have time for that. We both sat after grabbing food from the massive line. Baxter went on to talk more about how his whole family was lifer's and that he wanted to be like his dad and brothers. They had there own ships, his goal was to be the youngest in his family to get his. I nodded and smiled through the conversation. Picking at the food, but eating it. It wasn't the most appealing but I was starving.
Once we were done we walked back while super earth's news played over the speakers.
"You aren't one to really share are you?" Baxter asked standing outside my doorway once again.
"Look, Baxter it's nothing personal. I'm just very set in my plans."
Baxter leaned against the door frame as I began unclipping my uniform exposing a black t shirt and shorts under my suit. I set it on it's special stand in my room as I brushed my hair out of my face.
