PLEASE NOTICE— CHAPTER SIX.

Wes:
Sushi night. You in?

Violet:
Be there soon!

"Can we talk?" Mindy pulls Violet from her, standing in front of her, lightly twiddling her fingers.

"Yeah." Violet pats the seat next to her, inviting her best friend into her space. A good sign.

"I'm sorry for earlier. I shouldn't have pressed." Mindy admits, trying to mend her mistakes. "If you wanted to tell me what happened, you would've. I should've respected that."

Violet squints her eyes at the girl, jokingly gauging her reaction. "That's very mature of you."

"It's this new thing I'm trying." Mindy lifts her shoulder in a shrug, continuing the joke.

"Do you think it'll stick?" Violet asks, the corner of her lip lifting into a smirk as her eyes lighten from joking with her best friend.

"Absolutely." Mindy exaggerates. "I'm so known for my ability to navigate conversations in the best way possible."

Mindy takes her shoulder and bumps it against Violet's, the two girls crumbling into each other in laugher, remaining in each other's embrace long after silence closed them in.

Violet stares toward, eyes catching on the floor of the Meeks-Martin house where the friend group had many sleepovers. It's the thought of the happy moments that urges Violet to be open with Mindy.

"I'm not ready to talk about what happened before. There was, something that happened and it really sucked." Violet draws on the memory, the pain she'd felt that caused her to completely push Chad away. "I think there was a miscommunication before— but I'm not ready to talk to him about that yet."

"So, what are you ready to talk to him about?" Mindy asked gently, trying to open the girl up without pushing too hard. She desperately wanted to know what happened between the two but they were sealed like a vault.

"I've spent the last year pushing him away but the moment that he realized that I wasn't okay, he stepped up. Even if I didn't deserve it." Violet admits.

It had been plaguing her mind for days now. Chad was showing her kindness, the look on his eyes was so intense. She didn't understand how he could act like this after that night.

"He cares about you." Mindy says simply.

Mindy had seen it for herself. Maybe she'd missed it before, but she'd seen it today. He cared about her. More than she'd ever seen him care about anyone.

"I almost died last night." Violet fidgets with the collar of the hoodie that she'd warn to hide the bandages. Mindy's eyes immediate set it on the movement, briefly catching a glimpse of the white wrap.

"Holy shit." Panic echoes through the girls voice and her movement as she shakily turns to her friend.

"The police got there just in time." Violet grinds out, forcing the words through her mouth as the grave tone tortures her throat with the pain of the memories. "He almost killed me."
