The KDF headquarters.
The building loomed ahead, an imposing structure of steel and glass, reflecting the bright afternoon sun. The headquarters was massive, with multiple wings extending outward like the arms of a starfish. The front entrance was guarded by heavily armed soldiers. Tall fences with barbed wire lined the perimeter, and security cameras dotted every corner, their lenses glinting ominously.
The car passed through a heavily fortified gate, and we entered a vast courtyard. Rows of military vehicles were parked in neat lines, and soldiers in uniform marched in formation, their boots thudding rhythmically against the pavement.
Kenji sat next to me, silent and staring out the window. His profile was tense, his jaw clenched, and his eyes fixed on some distant point beyond the horizon. I hadn't heard anything about Gigantron or Emi, and it made me anxious. Did the KDF manage to get to them? Was Kenji able to get them out before the recording leaked? Were they still in Tokyo, or were they somewhere safe? The questions swirled in my mind, but I couldn't ask him, not with the two officers sitting in the front seats.
I wanted to touch Kenji, to reach out and take his hand, to offer some comfort in the only way I knew how. But I hesitated, unsure if he even wanted me near him. The memory of our last conversation made my chest ache. He hadn't trusted me. I had told him I loved him. At a time like this, it felt like everything was falling apart around us.
I wished more than ever that I knew what he was thinking. His silence was impenetrable, his expression unreadable. It was as if he had built a wall around himself, and I was left on the outside, desperately trying to find a way in. I fought to keep my emotions in check as the car pulled up to the entrance of the main building.
"Here we are," the officer in the passenger seat said, glancing at us.
The door opened, and I climbed out, the heat hitting me instantly. We were escorted through a series of security checks; the officers' faces were impassive as they scanned us. They took our belongings and searched us for weapons, and finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we were allowed inside.
The building was even more impressive from the inside. It was sterile and sleek with high ceilings, gleaming floors, a sea of desks with metal surfaces, cubicles, and bright, clinical lighting. The walls were lined with security cameras, their lenses following our every move, adding to my growing unease.
Kenji and I were led through a maze of corridors, our footsteps echoing off the polished floors. Whispers followed us, hushed conversations that made my skin prickle. I kept my eyes downcast, staring at the floor, knowing all too well that people were talking about us again.
I heard the click of a camera shutter and my heart rate quickened. The guard's stern voice barked out a warning, "No pictures." The tension in the air was thick.
Suddenly, I felt an arm wrap around my shoulders. I looked up, startled, to see Kenji holding me close. He looked down at me, his eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?" he asked softly.
I nodded; my voice caught in my throat.
"It'll be okay," he said, his voice steady. "Just focus on me, okay?"
His confidence was infectious, and I found myself nodding again, feeling a little more grounded. I leaned into him. Together, we followed the guards as they led us down another long hallway.
"We need to separate you two now," one of the guards said, stopping in front of a pair of doors. "You'll go into separate rooms."
I swallowed hard and my stomach twisted in knots. I turned to Kenji, my eyes wide with fear. He pulled me into a tight hug, his arms strong around me. He kissed my forehead tenderly, melting some of my anxiety away. "It'll be over soon," he murmured against my skin. "Just tell the truth. Remember, none of it is real."
