C H A P T E R T W E N T Y F O U RWHEN MEVANYA landed, blood still ran in the water and stained the grass dark.
The bodies had already been removed by the different sides, but the smell of death hung in the air.As Ilaxia touched the ground, she jerked, as if she could feel it too and it made her nervous.
A group of Blackwood knights had approached as soon as they saw the two great dragons, and when they saw that they were the princess's, they lowered their defences.
The news that it had been Mevanya herself who had coldly murdered Otto Hightower had already spread through the kingdom, the loyalty of Alicent's youngest daughter and sister of the proclaimed king to Rhaenyra was already public knowledge, which had already caused several doubts and concerns among Green sympathisers.
"Princess," Willem Blackwood was the first to approach and greet her with a small bow, "What brings you here?"
Mevanya answered wordlessly, handing the man the letter that had come to her. When the temporary Lord Blackwood finished reading he sighed, and offered her to mount his horse to take her to where she was expected.
As one might expect, as they rode into the Raven town everything looked grim, the shadow of tragedy still darkening every face.
Lord Willem's horse stopped as they reached Raventree Hall, the castle where the Blackwood family resided, and he helped her off as the guards opened the gates.
"I must warn you, Princess, after what happened, my son does not look as he did before," the Lord sighed, the shadow of melancholy and sadness fading in his eyes.
"I understand," Mevanya nodded, and let the man open the door to the room where a boy stared out the window. When the door closed, Davos Blackwood turned to let Mevanya see what his father had referred to.
A huge diagonal scar across his face had distorted the boy's features, his left hand was missing two fingers, and his spirit looked so defeated that Mevanya couldn't help but swallow dryly.
"Davos..."
"I don't look so handsome anymore, do I?" He laughed without a hint of amusement, causing that ugly scar to twitch in an almost sinister way.Several moons ago Davos Blackwood had been one of the contenders for her hand, before her mother betrothed her to Aemond. And at the time, the only one she didn't dislike terribly. He was always a handsome boy, funny, a little crazy, but the only candidate who never wanted to treat her like an ostentatious object, a dragon incubator. That was why they had remained friends even after her official engagement.
"Please, I'm just glad to hear you're alive, how the fuck are you alive, anyway?" She moved closer to him, close enough to notice that the scar opened his lip, leaving part of his mouth uncovered.
"I have no idea, I just know I didn't give the same luck to those damn Brackens."
