SLEEP HADN'T been at all easy for Mevanya. Not with so much tormenting her head, so in the middle of the night, she slipped out of her room and into the room of the only person who made her feel safe at the moment.

When Jacaerys opened the door, it was clear that sleep was no comfort to the boy either.

"Nya, is something wrong?"
"It's nothing, it's just... I couldn't sleep."

Jacaerys smiled slightly, understanding that feeling of impassivity that also robbed him of rest lately.

He took the platinum's hand as she looked down at the floor, and with a tug that made her giggle a little, he pulled her into his room.

"Oh, Nya, if you wanted to get into my bed all you had to do was ask," his hand found its favourite place at her silk-covered waist, making Mevanya want to sigh.

Instead, the girl gathered her strength to keep her legs from shaking and rolled her eyes.

"All that time in the cold weather seems to have affected your brain, Jace."

The boy threw his head back with a chuckle, a gesture that made Mevanya's body shiver.

They both walked to the bed, Mevanya being the first to lie down with a heavy sigh. She was tired, exhausted, to tell the truth, and still, she couldn't find a way to fall asleep.

"Have you spoken to Baela?" She asked the boy as soon as she felt him slump down next to her, both of them staring up at the ceiling with that same heavy weight on their chests.
"Lately you two speak more to each other than to me," he tried to laugh, to release some of the tension, but like Mevanya, Jacaerys felt oppressed by it.
"I got a letter, do you know who from?" She suddenly changed the subject, her tone of voice even more sombre, making Jace turn to look at her to try to read her expressions, there were none on her face. "Lord Cregan."

Jacaerys held back the urge to roll his eyes, what was he, 12? Instead, he took a breath and waited to hear what had Mevanya so pensive.

"Rumors reached him that Daeron is to join the ranks."
"Nya..."

He couldn't find the right words, what could he say to the girl that would make her feel better, that would take away that defeated look from her beautiful eyes? Mevanya and Daeron had something like what he had had with Luke, or at least they had had it in the past. Now, they were on completely different sides, both feeling stabbed by the other, abandoned, betrayed. Jacaerys was aware that Daeron had been the only brother Mevanya had ever had hope for, and even he chose to stay on the side of the people who had hurt her the most. He could not begin to imagine the pain of that betrayal.

Mevanya said nothing more, only moved closer to Jacaerys until she was curled in his arms with her head resting on his shoulder.

Neither said another word, for neither needed to. It didn't take long for them to find peace in each other's arms, and sleep soon came when the torment ceased to assault them in their solitude.
