I just stood there as I heard the announcements for the planes landing and taking off was going on.
Naina called and said that I was on people pick-up duty. I don't quite like this job. Doesn't she know that I'm a well-known person? People recognise me here.
It's been 4 days since Pranay told me that he and Naina were getting married. He also told me something else but I don't want to go there today.
Anyway, I have been picking up relatives, friends and random people I didn't even know for the past 2 days and have been dropping them off at the hotels.
And today I finally have to pick up one last person. Naina called me before leaving and told me the person I had to pick up might or might not come. What is that supposed to mean?
Either that person is coming or not coming. I have no clue what's going on but I came to the airport anyway.
The flight landed and the announcements were made. I have no clue where is the mysterious person coming from.
After a while, the receiving area was filled with people. I held up the sign stating "Naina and Pranay". I don't know why I am holding their names up. Shouldn't it be the name of the person coming?
I kept waiting and waiting and suddenly my phone rang. It was Naina.
I picked up and I could hear some faint talking noises as if she was already talking to someone when she called me. It was a man's voice and I immediately recognised it as Pranay's.
"H-hello? Adi?" Naina spoke. "I think you should know about the person who's coming..."
Naina spoke in a very nervous tone. I turned back a little while still holding the sign making it visible for the person coming because I could not hear her properly because of all the noise.
"Ya okay. Tell me the name and why do you sound so nervous?" I enquired.
"W-what no no I am not nervous haha. it's just that I don't know how you'll react when you see the person."She said while laughing nervously.
I turned back completely now. I was getting frustrated. Why doesn't she just tell me who's coming? what is the big deal about all this person anyway?
Just when Naina started explaining to me who was coming and why I needed to stay calm, I got a little light pat on my shoulder.
The person standing behind me was wearing a very familiar perfume. I used to love this scent a lot because SHE used to wear this. W-wait. N-no no, it-it can't be her, right?
I mean why will she come to the wedding? Not after all these years. She is a very busy woman and she left without saying a word and now why will she come back now? Why so suddenly?
I slowly and very nervously turned back to look at the person.
And there she was. Standing right in front of me.
My whole world shifted in a split second as I looked down to match her eyes. She was looking for something in her bag and took out her phone and looked up again and my eyes met hers.
Our eyes met and she gasped parting her lips just enough. She hasn't changed at all. she is still the person I met in school.
She looked at me with a million emotions. Shock, sadness, guilt, hope, realisation, apologetically and there was also something I couldn't quite understand.
She had tears in her eyes.
My hands were about to move to wipe those tears off but I stopped. this was a force of habit. I always did this when she cried. I can't do this today.
"So, the person who's coming is..."Naina continued.
"Kavya" I finished in a very low voice. Almost like a whisper. Why did my voice sound so rough right now?
"Oh, how did you um know? Wait, did you meet her? Is she here? Hello? Hello? Aditya?"Naina spoke. I cut the call and put my arm by my side. I know it was rude of me but I just couldn't concentrate on anything because she was standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.
I kept looking at her and we maintained eye contact for what felt like an eternity but I didn't mind. Wait. What am I saying? I realised something.
