The next morning, when I woke up, all I could think about was last night. I waited for the blurriness to leave my vision before getting up out of bed. I looked at my phone for the time. 10:24. I had the day off of work.
As soon as I got up to close the curtains on my window, my phone started ringing.
"Hello?" I didn't read the caller id. Then I heard my best friend's voice.
"Y/n, you working tonight?" Ashley asked me.
Me and Ashley both work at the same bar, and on rare occasions we tend the bar together. Those days of work are my favorite.
"No I've got the day off, why?"
"Okay great, so there's this club opening like a couple blocks down from the bar, it's supposed to be like old money attire. You wanna hit it up with me after work?" Clubs and wild parties weren't really my thing, but I'd go every once in a while for Ashley, who's a complete party animal. Every single time, without fail I'd have to drive her home to my place to make sure she doesn't do anything stupid, or she'd go home with some pretty playboy who hits on her on the dance floor.
"Yeah, why not." It didn't really sound that bad. Plus, old money dress code sounds appealing.
"Yes!" I could hear the excitement in Ashley's voice. "You're the best! I'll come over soon with dresses for us, and we could spend the day together. Today is gonna be great I promise."
"Yeah that sounds good, maybe we could grab lunch and I'll cook dinner at the apartment."
"That sounds fantastic, see you soon!" She hung up on me. Ashley was a great friend to me, and I had to be a great friend to her. She didn't have really any friends that would put up with the amount of shit she does to make her life a facade and a distraction to what she's really dealing with, so I stepped in, and tried to build her back when she's in pieces. And not to mention she's the best to hang out with. I could already guess she was at the mall picking out dresses for us to wear tonight.
I walk out of my bedroom, and across the hall to my studio. I admired the beautiful messy room in the morning natural light. It was truly inspiring. I grabbed my apron off of the hook on the wall, slipped it on, and tied it back. I examined my window painting on the easel once again, and reached for my materials on the table next to it. I squeezed out paint onto my palette and picked up my brand new bottle of refined linseed oil to mix in with it. My mind immediately flew back to Gaege.

                                              ༺♱༻

About an hour later I heard a knock at the door. I set down my paintbrush in my mason jar and went out into my living room, covered in paint, with my apron still on. I held my hands in the air as to not get paint on anything. I glance through the peep hole and see Ashley with two dresses on hangers, and another mall branded bag full of goodies.
"Ashley you have a key!" I called to her through the door. "I can't open it I've got paint all over me."
"Oh yeah!" She shifted her bags to one hand and dug through her pockets for the key to my apartment, put the key in and turned it to open the door. She came in and set the dresses and the bags on the my black couch in the living room.
"We're gonna go through the haul, but you've gotta get that shit off of your hands babe-" Ashley pointed out the obvious.
"Yeah I've got a story for you too, walk and talk with me" I headed back to my studio and Ashley followed shortly behind me. I walked into the room and headed to my sink on the countertop.
"So what's the story?" Ashley asked, with a hint of confusion in her voice.
"So I was bored at home, watching some tv, art block yk how it is." I started washing my hands. Ashley nodded in agreement. "Then I figured that if I just go into the studio that my inspiration would come back to me, so I did. Soon to find out, my linseed oil is gone, and I don't have any rags." I dry my hands and head back to my apron hook working at the knot. Ashley decided to try to help me out.
"Boring story so far." She joked with me, untying the knot on my apron, allowing me to set it up back on the hook.
"Just listen," I walk out of my studio and back to the living room, Ashley follows, shutting the door behind her. "So I decide to go out to the store, yk that cute one down the street?"
     "Yeah...?"
"Turns out they actually have refined linseed oil which was a shot in the dark, but as I was looking for it, this cute guy walks in next to me trying to pick out some snacks." Ashley instantly got interested, she's been trying to set me up for ages.
"Holy shit" Ashley said, smiling, waiting to hear the rest of the story.
"He caught me staring at his tattoos and asked if I liked them..."
"Oh my god you creep!" Ashley replied, still smiling.
      "Oh shut up!"
      "I'm just playing! Continue please."
"I told him yes, and showed him mine and he really liked my right forearm tattoo."
      "The one from that game?"
"Mhm, and he said he didn't wanna keep me so he went to grab the rest of his things, but that's not all." We both sat down on barstools infront of my mini bar in my kitchen.
"As I was going to pay for my things, I didn't have enough money and he helped pay the difference for me. Im sitting there thinking, wow, this guy just got cuter."
"Holy shit! That's great y/n! Did you get his number?"
I didn't ask for his number.
"Uhm... no-" I winced. Ashley's smile dropped, and her mouth stayed agape.
      "Y/n..." She scolded me.
"Fuck I'm never going to see him again." I rested my palm on my forehead.
"I mean you never know, small world" Ashley said, trying to lift my spirits. It did give me a glimmer of hope.
"Okay what did you get from the mall?" I asked, changing the subject. That's what Ashley was ultimately excited about.
"Okay!" Ashley jumped off of the barstool. "So I got these cute dresses, I was thinking for our outfits, polar opposites! So the black one is yours and the white one is mine," she held up two equally beautiful dresses that matched each other. The black one was long, with two slits in either side that rode up to about where my upper thigh would be, and it looked like the night sky. When the light hit it just right, it sparkled beautifully. Towards the top of the dress it had thin straps about the width of my index finger, and a V-neck cut running down the front. I was in love with it.
"That's for me?" I asked in surprise.
"Cute right!?" Ashley handed me the dress. Hers looked exactly like mine, but a white silk material, and no sparkle. She handed me hers too. I laid them both down on the bar neatly.
"And I may or may not have gotten us some accessories," she said, grabbed the other bag. She pulled everything out at once and listed off what she had got.
"I got you some long black gloves to match your dress, and me some white ones," I was intrigued with this old money haul. "And here, this is for you," she handed me an old fashioned pearl necklace. The necklace was beautiful. The pearls were a little bigger than small, and you could see all of the white, pink and blue hues in each and every pearl. I examined it for a while, and placed it with my dress on the bar. Ashley had shown me a similar one, but black. It looked more like obsidian pearls rather than actual pearls. Still gorgeous. Ashley really knew how to shop.
"Okay and so I was thinking we leave around 9 o clock after we're all ready, have some fun and I promise this time I won't go home with any guys."
     "Promise?"
"Pinky promise" Ashley held out her pinky. I continued to wrap my pinky around hers with satire.
Ashley is an amazing friend, and I'm not big on clubs, but tonight actually sounds like it could be a lot of fun, and I'm going to give it chance, I think Ashley would like that. I need to let loose, and she agrees.
