The conversation with Faramir was as inconclusive as Filip expected, several times on the verge of getting impatient and railing against the alpha. He could not understand how his brother Marcus put up with such patience with certain pack leaders, especially one like Faramir. He refused to help them with the mission to find the Algaria, in his opinion bringing them no benefit:
"You boast of being ahead in medicine and botany but you don't even know how to cure your alpha's daughter without resorting to a plant lost in the mountains. "
"we can't prevent wolves from getting sick, but we certainly know how to treat them, and algaria is the solution"
"and who told you that it is the right remedy?"
"I just know. If you want to prove your alliance to our pack this is the time, Faramir. Help me save Aria."
"pff, you always have the same conceit, even in my territory. But by helping you I would be doing you a favor, not your pack."
"what on earth are you saying?"
"Klein, Klein, let's not fool ourselves, we are alone now, we can talk among alphas." Filip caught that his interlocutor was acidly enjoying himself:
"if this had been a mission for the good of your pack, Marcus himself would have come to talk to me, don't you think? And instead you show up, with your snooty ways appealing to our alliance as a bargaining chip, expecting me to accept unconditionally."
"I don't expect your help. I demand it. Our pack has already proven our alliance to Awa, now it is time to reciprocate. Marcus's daughter is in danger."
"pff, how presumptuous. Pania must be grateful to have your brother as its leader; I can't imagine how it would be otherwise."
"actually in his place I wouldn't waste my time getting rid of certain packs," the two alphas threw sharp blows at each other, which were unlikely to result in a useful agreement, and for which Faramir's mood became more serious:"algaria is unreachable, and even if it wasn't I don't intend to waste my time with all those rouges. As soon as you kill two of them four more pop up, so it makes no sense for me to endanger my warriors."
"so you categorically refuse to help us?" Filip waited for the answer like a sentence, and from the silence that followed he understood Faramir's indecision, aware of the consequences that both possible answers would cause, but finally he said:
"unless I get something."-------
Nori was not allowed to search for the scribe, forced like the warriors to wait in a nearby hall until their alpha showed up, giving the impression that they were prisoners and not guests.
"christ, one more hour here and I swear I'm going to go crazy," Jean was lounging in a chair, tired of having to wait, while Nori observed from the only window present the small square below and flocked by the only staff.
How long does it take? Why are we being treated this way? Are they still talking or has he been taken to another room?
The tension of waiting waned as soon as Filip entered through the front door, immediately getting everyone's attention:
"calm, calm, I'll explain everything." his and Nori's eyes found each other and Filip's voice sounded more apprehensive:
"are you okay?"
"yes... it's all gone " he showed his healed hand and Filip seemed more reassured
"good. They give headaches, these Awa's. And in fact get ready to be treated as prisoners."
"god, I'm beginning to think it wasn't bad in the tent in the cold." Everyone listened attentively to their alpha, who spoke frankly"Faramir's warriors will escort us to a certain point, then we will continue alone to the Atarangi Peaks. We will not be allowed to roam the lands of Awa except at the points necessary for our expedition. And we will have to retrieve some algaria for Faramir as well."
"What does he need it for?" asked Nori but the alpha could not answer:
"he wouldn't tell me. They probably want to artificially plant it in a safer place away from the rogues. In any case these are the deals, that's all I could get."
"I doubt they will succeed. I mean to plant algaria here" Filip looked at Nori thoughtfully :
"this should not concern us. Let's just do our job and leave this place soon" the warriors nodded and Tormund added:
"when shall we leave?"
"at dawn. Faramir says fewer rogues are spotted in the morning, so we will stop here for the night. No one leaves the pack house, is that clear?"
"yes alpha," replied the warriors, bored by those restrictions:
"well, our rooms are ready. Nori, come with me" Nori was astonished to be called, but tried to remain impassive and just follow Filip, having no idea what he wanted to tell him.
