The Next Day
I headed to work today thinking it would just be a normal, chaotic day in the emergency room again, but it was not what I thought it was.
They assigned me here because of my physique; they needed someone who could help the paramedics get patients to the emergency room.
I liked that.
EMERGENCY ROOM
Ambulance arrives
[The doors to the emergency rooms burst open as the paramedics rush in with a patient on a stretcher.]
"The man following the patient is looking very anxious and very worried; is that the patient's friend or something? "I think with curiosity.
"(breathing heavily) Nurse, we have a 54-year-old male, Mr. Jeon Lee Min, in critical condition. Possible heart attack. Vitals are unstable. My co-nurse Eujin shouts, "His blood pressure is 90/60, his pulse is weak, and he has been unresponsive for the last five minutes."
"(checking the patient's IV) We've administered 324 mg of aspirin and started an IV line with normal saline. There are no known allergies. He's on beta-blockers for hypertension," another co-nurse, Hye In, states.
"Understood. Let's get him into Trauma Bay 1," I said as I turned to the patient's companion, only to find him crying.
"Please, you have to save him! He's my... (voice breaking) "He's my father," he replied while trying to stop his tears.
"Sir, what's your name? "I asked.
"(sniffling) U-uh, Jeon Jihyun...", he replied.
"Okay Mr. Jeon. We're going to do everything we can, okay? Please have a seat and try to stay calm. I'll come update you as soon as we know more," I said to him with reassurance.
The paramedics and Nurse Tae Young quickly maneuvered the stretcher into Trauma Bay 1. [He begins giving orders to the team.]
"Let's get a 12-lead EKG, draw blood for cardiac enzymes, and start a second IV line. Prepare for intubation, if necessary. Monitor his oxygen saturation and get the crash cart ready just in case," I instructed the ER team.
When I was going to the family area to speak with Mr. Jeon, I noticed him pacing back and forth, running his hands through his hair. He's clearly distressed. Although this sounds weird, I found it attractive for him. I don't know, though.
"Excuse me, Mr. Jeon, we're doing everything we can to stabilize your father. His condition is serious, but we're closely monitoring him and have our best team on it."
He looks up, eyes filled with tears, "Thank you. Is there anything I can do? Anything at all?
I placed a reassuring hand on Jeon's shoulder and said, "Right now, the best thing you can do is stay calm and be here for him, okay? We may need some information from you later, but for now, just try to take deep breaths. We'll keep you informed."
He nodded, "O-oh, I understand. Thank you, Nurse...?
"Tae Young. Just call me Tae Young," I said, smiling.
I squeezed his hand gently and said, "We're doing everything we can. I'll update you as soon as I have more information. Hang in there, Jeon.
[He returns to Trauma Bay 1 to continue attending to Mr. Lee, leaving Jeon to anxiously wait for news.]
[Inside Trauma Bay 1, the medical team works swiftly and efficiently.]
(Eujin adjusts the oxygen mask. "His oxygen saturation is increasing. BP is 100/70."
"We've got some improvement on the EKG, but he's still at risk."
(focused) "Keep monitoring him. Let's prepare for a possible transfer to the cath lab, if necessary. We're not out of the woods yet, but we're getting there."
[Back in the family area, Jeon sits down, his hands trembling, whispering a quiet prayer.]
[To be continued.]
