Mad Max
Principality of Monaco,
May 2022🏎️
Once we left the house to reach the event, something special happened.
"Do you want to ride it?" Charles asked me, pointing to the Ferrari with the number 16 on it. We were about to set off and we could also call ourselves almost late, but certainly not my fault. The Monegasque had this need to have to brush his teeth several times, going so far as to have to change a shirt for having soiled it with toothpaste.
"You know, since I've had it, I've never let anyone ride it." He confided in me without waiting for my answer. I was speechless for a few seconds, I could only look insistently at the jewel in front of my eyes.
"Really?" I asked, looking at the car in all its beauty, he nodded eagerly and smiled at me.
"Yes." I just said, taking the keys out of his hands and opening the door to sit in the seat in front of the steering wheel. The boy took his place at my side almost immediately and I started the car. Pressing the pedals with heels would not have been very comfortable, but I would not have given up being able to ride it for anything in the world.
"You have to give me directions." I added as I left, if my car in England had made this sound, I would have driven it every day to hear it.
I accelerated slightly, still staying within the limits, turning towards the Monegasque I found him calm watching me.
"What's the matter?" I asked, smiling slightly, turning left after his command.
"It's a vision, to see you driving my car." She answered as seriously as possible and suddenly I felt hot.
"Lord Perceval, tell me where to go." My sentence caused him a sincere laugh and he continued to look at me for the rest of the little trip. I had heard Carlos use that nickname more than once, I had thought it was a joke between them, but the Spaniard confided to me that it was one of his names.
The city in the evening seemed even more beautiful, almost fake. It was my turn to turn around to see my boyfriend and with the backdrop of the sea beyond the window, if possible, it looked even more beautiful.
"When we arrive, leave the keys with the valet. I warn you that it will be full of paparazzi, there will be so many celebrities, so I can't have control over this." The Moor's voice seemed to want to take the blame, but I knew it had nothing to do with it, he couldn't control everything.
"I imagined it, don't worry, Charles." I reached out to take hers and squeezed it.
As previously warned, when we arrived in front of the place where the evening would take place, it was full of photographers, who once recognized the car of the predestined, approached to surround it on my side.
"Well, I think they're confused." I began to get anxious, how would I get out?
"They should have kept their distance... Wait, I'll go out first and then after a few seconds you get off." He warned me and did so the next instant. People, noticing him, ran to the opposite side, still giving Charles a way to walk towards my door. He opened it and held out his hand to me."My lady, shall we go together?" He asked me jokingly, despite the fact that there was chaos behind him. That reassured me a little, because I got out grabbing his hand and closed the door with the other.
We walked to the entrance, where the moor left the keys to the parking attendant. A mix of voices calling his name and asking ambiguous questions accompanied us on the walk to the door, so much so that once inside I had to blink my eyes several times, blinded by the flashes.
A middle-aged lady, as soon as she saw the boy, lit up and calling him "Mr. Leclerc", as if he were fifty years old, accompanied us to our table. The room was arranged with many round tables, each decoration recalled the color lavender, even on the table the flowers and napkins were. We were shown a precise table and looking at it I noticed that it was already half occupied.
Other celebrities that I didn't recognize began to take their places around, I watched the huge room fill up completely. A dark marble box was placed at the back of the room with a microphone resting on a white structure, probably for later use.
"Hi guys." He greeted Charles in the direction of his fellow drivers, I did the same in a lower voice.
Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas were present at the table, the latter accompanied by a woman sitting next to him.
"Charles, what was it like coming in?" Max asked ironically, probably referring to a situation similar to ours.
"An uproar, the hilarious thing is that she was driving, so they all lined up at her door." The Monegasque at my side answered, motioning me to sit down where the note with my name was placed.
"Uh Leclerc the predestined, let his girlfriend drive the car! Abigail, lucky you, when I asked her, she said no." The McLaren driver pretended to be sad, and his statement made me burst out laughing.
"Good evening." A voice spoke behind us, Lewis Hamilton, he sat in the last free seat of the table, between Charles and Daniel. All the drivers greeted him and Max poured himself wine at my side, without waiting for a waiter to arrive.
"Take it easy Mad Max." Bottas chuckled and that was the first and last time I heard him speak.
I walked slightly closer to the defending champion and repeated the previous phrase like a laughing chant: "Take it easy Mad Max." And my boyfriend next to me had to hear me because he burst out laughing.
The dinner went on quietly and some photographers of the event often came to take pictures at our table, where Ricciardo and I had fun ruining with a few strange faces or a few more fingers.
Sometimes Charles and Verstappen also joined and it came out too hilarious, where Daniel was behind the Dutchman pretending to spill the contents of the glass on his head and my boyfriend and I watched the scene in shock. I should have looked for it and saved it once the event was over.
"And so you are an engineer in Ferrari? How are you?" Lewis asked me in a moment of silence.
"Yes, in the previous season I worked for the Haas team, this year as a promotion I am in Ferrari. It's a good environment, the people who work there are very qualified, but I dare say we're in Formula 1, if you're not qualified in your job here, where should you be?" I asked rhetorically and the boys agreed with me.
"You are good together." Hamilton concluded smiling at us, I almost got embarrassed and like a reflection my body ran to recover Charles' hand.
Later the donations were announced, all five pilots gave a lot of money for research into the treatment of various cancers and later it was time to return home. The boys said goodbye, with the intention of meeting again shortly for the Grand Prix.
That moment came, but not immediately, the days before the race I resumed working in Maranello, returning to do the evenings with Victoria and Andrea to watch some films, since in the last few weeks we had hardly had time to meet.
They asked me many questions about my driver and unfortunately I had to answer them all, I felt with a light on my face and in the following days I had the same feeling walking through the corridors of the Ferrari headquarters.
Despite Charles' private jet habit, the anxiety about planes had by no means gone away, but it would be my first trip overseas. I was excited to go to the United States again, but the fear remained that at any moment I would fall and I would freeze to death in the sea.
If someone needed to calm down about this fear, they absolutely should not turn to me, at least I understood that.
