When they returned Pantherroar and Flamefoot shared the news with Bramblefur. Who immediately called a meeting.
"StormClan! A strange cat scent has been detected on our territory, and a puma was found several sunrises ago. So I'm going to send Pumastare, Ripplepaw, Flamefoot, and Crowwhisker to track down the stranger," Bramblefur yowled.
Flamefoot and the rest of the patrol prepared to leave. They stood up and padded towards the leader's rock.
Bramblefur nodded, "Go to the border of NightClan territory and follow the scent. But be careful! Don't let anyone see you or smell you!"
The patrol dispersed into the forest. Their paws pounding on the ground and their ears and eyes open.
"I can smell the scent!" Pumastare growled.
Crowwhisker put his nose to the air and bristled. "It goes into NightClan territory! We must be careful."
The patrol stayed quiet and followed the scent. Keeping low to the ground and staying alert. At this time NightClan would be in camp, so they had an advantage. But if any cat saw them or caught their scent, they would be killed or chased out.
Pumastare found a trail of pawprints with the same scent on them. So he signalled with his tail and followed the pawprints.
The trail led them to a clearing with burnt tree stumps and fallen down trees. A river flowed through the clearing and towards the lake. Crowwhisker scuffed the ground angrily with a paw.
"We lost the scent now!" he hissed.
"Don't worry, we can follow the river to the lake and find the rogue," said Pumastare.
The patrol followed the river until they got to their own territory and then the lake.
"The rogue is gone! He's vanished!" Crowwhisker yowled.
"Come, we must tell Bramblefur," Pumastare meowed.
Flamefoot tried to find the scent with Ripplepaw's help. But they found no tracks and no clues. So they hurried after the patrol back to the camp.
Bramblefur watched curiously as they approached and bowed their heads. The queen's gaze moved over them.
"We followed the scent into NightClan territory but it ended at a river. So we followed the river to the lake and still found nothing," Pumastare reported.
Bramblefur flattened her ears, "We can't let a rogue go as he pleases in our territory! I'll summon the deputies and we will make sure we find the rogue."
