"Don't worry, I'll just tell them you finally went to see a doctor for that little issue of yours." Benjamin snickers as he exits the car.

"Please, have mercy. You've tainted my reputation enough."

Ezra laughs beside me.

"I'll think about it."

He slams the door shut, and I sigh before I continue driving. My dad invited me to lunch today.

Lunch with the Mikhailovs, sounds like absolute torture.

Last night I was happier than ever, I got together with my mate. She finally knows about... me. Nothing is keeping me from loving her anymore. Then, when I'm finally home, I get a call from my father to ruin my good mood.

I mindlessly let my hand slide over the bandage covering my fresh tattoo. I can't wait to show it to Elle. My guess: she'll pretend it's too much, but secretly absolutely love it. Maybe I should already consider getting a second one. I should ask what Elle prefers, maybe she doesn't think too many tattoos are attractive.

Vibing with Ezra, time passes by quickly, and soon enough I'm dropping off Ezra before driving down the pack's main road.

The Nightstalkers' pack is quite different from other ones. It's big, far bigger than the town I'm currently staying in. Despite its size, I wouldn't really call it a big city either. More of... a few towns governed by the same mayor, in this case: the alpha, my dad.

He's fairly powerful, many people depend on him, I admire his strength. Even when his mate died, he managed to keep going like before. The Nightstalkers are thriving. Apart from our endless issue called: rogues everywhere, we're not at war with anyone. There are some tensions, sure, but we have so many allies, there really isn't anything to worry about for our citizens.

One of those allies are the Mikhailov's. They originate from Russia but decided to move her a few generations ago.

The same goes for the Nightstalkers, in a way. My grandfather was French. He had a twin brother too, the gen gets passed down, but always skips a generation. So, just like me, he didn't end up becoming an alpha. The only difference, he lucked out and found his mate, the daughter of the alpha of the Nightstalkers, who were just a small pack back then. My grandfather build this all up.

I drive down Jean Alarie Street. It's the most important place in town. It has all kinds of governing buildings, like the barracks but there are stores, restaurants and cafés too. When there are fairs or festivals, it's always here. It's one of my favourite places in the world.

It's almost completely pedestrianized, everyone walking in the middle of the road with their shopping bags. Most civilians don't have any business here with their car, the road ends in a big square with the packhouse. That does mean, when there is a car it's either the army, people with political importance, allies of the pack, or friends and family of the alpha. Or the alpha himself, of course.

But yeah, when people see my car coming, they move out of the way, still trying to get a peek inside. Once they realize it's me, after not seeing me for a while, children start waving at me. Some adults bow their heads and some just stare at me.

Not too long ago, I was used tot this kind of attention. Now it feels weird. Weird but good, I remember why I was so upset about leaving again.
If I had known how things were going to turn out back then, I would've left all of this behind without any hesitation, though. Probably with a smile on my face.

I find a spot for my car and as I get out I pull my sunglasses back down to cover my eyes.
The crowd is now silent, some of them pretend to be busy, some don't care and look at me curiously. A short nod is all I give them as a greeting before I slam the door shut.
