Are you going to the Lantern Festival tonight?

Sang Ai-mei sighed, clicking her phone off and turning on her side, staring out her room window, catching a glimpse of the blue sky. Someone knocked on her door, snapping her attention away from her window.

"Sang Ai, are you going to the Lantern Festival?" her brother, Sang Ming, called through the door. "I can take you." Sang Ai-mei rolled off her bed, stumbling into her slippers.

"Sure...are Mama and Baba going?" she opened her closet, throwing on some less rumpled clothing. She knew the answer, but she still wanted to ask.

"They can't make it." Sang Ai-mei grabbed her small backpack, throwing things furiously into it. She didn't even know why she was so mad. It wasn't like it was the first time her parents 'couldn't make it'. Grabbing her phone off the bed, she opened the door, walking past her older brother.

"Let's go," she said coldly, hurrying down the stairs to the front door.

"Wha- Hold on, Sang Ai, the car's locked!" Sang Ming ran after his sister, struggling to take his car keys out of his pockets. Sang Ai-mei was already in the car waiting when Sang Ming made it out of the house. He slid into the driver seat, glancing at his sister worriedly.

I'm going. Sang Ai-mei texted back.

Great! I'll meet you there.

"Great...." she sighed, her hand tightening on her phone.

"Sangsang!" Sang Ai-mei glanced up, stiffening when she saw Fan Xia and her group of girls. "Over here!" Sang Ming nudged his sister, his group of friends joining him. Sang Ai-mei hesitantly left, Fan Xia giving her a big, fake hug.

"Sangsang, these are my friends Wang Xing, Yi Aihan and Chong Beiye. I hope you don't mind having them here." Fan Xia smiled. Sang Ai-mei didn't mind that Fan Xia's friends were here, but she did mind being here with Fan Xia.

"No." Sang Ai-mei said flatly.

"Wonderful!" Fan Xia's voice sounded like it was covered in bitter-sweet honey. Sang Ai-mei's lips tightened as Fan Xia and hr group led her around, buying snacks and a lantern for each person to let off later.

The time came for the lanterns to be released. Sang Ai-mei closed her eyes, whispering a wish under her breath.

"I wish, that I will have a new life." Her breath clouded in the air, "I wish to be loved. I want to restart. I don't care how, I just want to restart." The last word fell out of her mouth as she let go of the paper lantern, watching it float away and get lost in the many other lanterns.
