It was the night of my mother's birthday. I have spent all my pocket money to buy a gift for her.
My mother deserves the world but it's hard to give it to her when my father left us both to struggle through our lives. I do have decent clothing and a few Cd's that I listen to on my radio but I didn't have as much as the wealthy young adults that live around here. I was always looked down upon because of it.
The chilly wind swept through the room from the small crack in the window. I wrapped my white coat tighter around myself.
My mother opened the purple velvet box laid out in front of her and smiled as the shiny gold, angel charm was revealed. She looked at me smiling, her wrinkles seemed to do so too.
"You never fail to surprise me " she says, placing her hand on my cheek and running it through my long brown hair.
I help her clasp the necklace around her neck and hug her from behind
"Happy birthday Ma."

Later that evening a loud knock came in contact with the wooden door of our home. I jolted at the sudden sound of noise since I was a light sleeper. My mother slid out of the bed beside me and wrapped her purple robe around herself before she answered the door.
I peered around the corner as my mother opened the door. A small gasp escaped her lips at the sight of Alex Bullman. His healthy mustache was freshly trimmed and he wore a new, navy business suit.
"Ah, Ms Wington" says Alex "may I come in?"
My mother nods.
He stepped foot into our apartment with two thugs behind him. Both crossing their arms over their chests. My mother boiled the jug in the kitchen and made her way to the bedroom. She noticed me standing there and told me to sit on my bed.
"What's going on ma?" I asked quietly, wrapping a blanket around myself and crossing my legs.
"They don't know you are here" she whispered "stay quiet and try to fall asleep."
She walked out of the room and made her way to the kitchen, pouring the boiled water, milk and a tea into a cup, serving it to Alex.
"Now let's talk about the pay, shall we?" asked Alex as my mother sat across from him.
The pay.
I hate those two words.
"Two hundred dollars was to be inserted in my bank last week" Alex says "where is it?"
My mother gulped "I-I haven't earned it yet" she says. Her gaze fell upon the floor causing her grey locks to fall over her face "I had somethings to take care of."
"Like what?" Asked Alex "what could be more important?"
"My life."
"I understand that Ms Wington, but you do know that your life will crumble if you don't do this" says Alex "so where is she?"
Her deep brown eyes, identical to mine, looked up at Alex "she isn't here. Please, I need just two more weeks."
"This is business Belinda, more time isn't given in business" Alex said "now hand over your daughter and you can carry on with your life!"
My heart pounded loudly in my chest. Where was I suppose to be going?
"I told you she isnt here! And what life? There is no life without my daughter, Alex" my mother argues " you know how much she means to me!"
"I understand" Alex replies "that's why I'm taking her away from you."
The argument grew louder and soon turned into shouts. Alex and my mother were both standing, faces inches away from each other.
"I have to make a living, Alex! You don't understand how hard that is for me!"
"Life doesn't come easy for everyone!"
"You wouldn't know! Your a rich bastard!"
My mother pushed Alex to the point where he shoved her to the ground. I instantly ran out of my room to help her up.
"Leave her alone!" I shout.
"Darcy go back to bed" my mother said sternly.
"Ah there she is" says Alex "how are you Darcella?"
Alex ran his index finger and thumb over his mustache.
"Don't speak to her" my mother snapped.
"So Belinda, another lie has dared to escape out of your mouth in my presence" Alex grits glaring down at my mother.
At this point Alex was intimidating enough for me to hide behind my mother. It seemed to amuse him to see me in such a cowardly state, even though I was eighteen years of age.
"Please take anything you want!" Begged my mother "take me!"
"But men wouldn't want something as old, they need someone like Darcella" says Alex "not for sexual intercourse" he ensures by mother "but for whatever else they desire."
I gulped.
"You had this coming Belinda" says Alex "I warned you."
"She isn't coming with you" my mother snaps.
Alex motions his thugs to step closer to us. They seized my arms, dragging me out the front door to the car parked on the lawn.
"Please no!" I shout "let me go!"
"Alex! Bring her back right now! Darcella im coming!"
I have never seen my mother fight so hard. She punched Alex square in the face and ran outside. The thugs chucked me in the car and quickly jumped to the front. They plugged the key in and locked the doors before speeding down the street. My mother ran after the car, bare footed, as fast as her feet could carry her.
"Darcy!" I heard her shout.
In moments tears flooded my cheeks as I pounded on the car door, breaking the door handle as I did so. As much as I weeped and screamed until my lungs had no air, my mother couldn't save me.
I couldn't lose my mother.
I just couldn't.
