By breathing accelerated as the black car I was strapped in drove up a ramp and onto a driveway belonging to a mansion. Pink roses covered the front lawn and a fountain was placed in the middle of it.
I unbuckled my seat belt as a thug opened the door for me, the other immediately grabbed one of my wrists to prevent me from escaping. I studied the beautiful surroundings, every single thing was delicate and peaceful.
I followed Alex to the front door. He wore a new black business suit. He pushed the doorbell and a loud melody echoed through the house. A distinguished man answered the door, a smile spreading widely on his face.
"Alex" says the man, sticking his hand out.
"Desmond" says Alex "nice to see you doing well."
"The girl?" Asked Desmond. I noticed a slight British accent as he spoke.
Alex moved out of the way so I was visible to Desmond. The thug let go of my wrist. I looked up at him, attempting to plead with my eyes. I didn't want him to take me inside. I wanted to go home.
Desmond nods "perfect." He steps aside as we walk in.
He introduces me to Bonnie as I sat on the couch in the living room. Desmond explains to Bonnie why I'm here while Alex talks to me.
Alex didn't talk to me though. He threatened me.
"If I hear one single complaint from Desmond there will be serious consequences."
I nod. I was unable to look him in the eye so my orbs just observed the patterns on the tiles. As they both walked away into Desmond's office Bonnie turned to me and smiled. I couldn't help but notice that her blond hair sat perfectly in place even though she was old and wrinkled.
"Would you like a drink?" She asked me walking into the kitchen. Her Texas accent made it difficult for me to understand.
I shrugged "yeah I guess" I say.
Bonnie boils the jug filled with water. The sound of the water boiling seemed to break our large awkward silence.
"Can I ask you a question?" I say as the sound died down.
"I know what it is and I can't help you leave, I'm sorry."
I sighed and continued to observe the patterns on the tiles.
"If there was an escape route, darlin' I would be long gone."
Desmond suddenly walks in on our conversation. My knees trembled as he walked over to me.
"A lot needs to be done while I'm gone" he says. His rather tall body leaned over as he held his hands behind his back "Bonnie will show you around."
He grabbed his coat that hung on the one of the dining chairs and grabbed his keys that were placed on the kitchen table. He walked out the door, shutting and locking it behind him.
"You mustn't do anything silly, child" says Bonnie "security cameras lurk in every corner."
I follow Bonnie as she gives a tour around the mansion that had three floors. My feet ached from walking in heels for a long period of time.
"Your shoes should always be clean as you enter the house and your hat or jacket must be hung on the rack near the front door. Spare clothes from Elise will be delivered everyday and-"
I listened to Bonnie rant about the rules that Desmond had set for the me as we walked around the three floors. We finally walked back into the living room, where we started.
"Now, you slip your shoes off and start mopping the floor while I do the washing" ordered Bonnie.
She hands me a bucket filled with water and a mop. I slip my heels off, returning back to my normal height and placed them near the front door. I dunked the mop into the water and mopped the floor, sweeping up all the dirt and dust particles.
The soap used in the water smelt like lavender flowers. My mother always smelt like lavender flowers. The sweet smell would fill my nose as I hugged her or when she tucked me into bed.
My stomach seemed to be doing flips because I felt home sick. The pain in my stomach occurred the moment I set foot in my dorm that I shared with Anne, because I knew that if I don't escape soon, this will be my life.
I don't want this life.
Even my rough childhood was better than this.
----------
I had finished a three floors in two hours. I was so used to packing the dishes away while my mother mopped the floor. I never knew how tiring it would be.
Bonnie and I sat on the couch sipping our tea. I never liked tea but when it's made Bonnie's way I can make an exception. My legs were tucked comfortably underneath me as I held my cup with both hands. I listened to Bonnie's story on how she became a life long doll.
She was in the same situation I was, only she was taken away from her children. She glanced at her gold watch and sighed.
"It's been fifteen minutes" she says "hand wash some of the dishes that are still left out while I iron Desmond's clothes."
I made my way to the kitchen and grabbed a sponge in the sink to begin my job. For two months I have to put up with large amounts of chores. It didn't seem too bad considering the circumstances I was in but I was sure going to be tired by the end of each day.
I felt like Cinderella although my life wasn't a fantasy story with a happy ending. I wasn't sure about my ending. The only thing that will make me happy is to see Ma again and maybe Darren.
Darren was my mother's best friend. He experienced many horrible encounters with Alex that he didn't wish to share. On some occasions he would insert money in our bank. We would repay him by giving him dinner three nights in a row.
Darren was a like a father I never had. He treated both me and my mother with respect, unlike my actual father.
"What are you doing?" asked Bonnie as she caught me dazing off into my own world.
"You do realise that a lot needs to be done. The tables need to be wiped, the shelves need to be dusted and the bed sheets in all nine rooms need to be changed."
I nod and quickly scrub the dishes before grabbing a cloth to go and any dust any shelf in sight. I noticed that there was a library to the left as you walk in the front door. I switched the light on and to my horror cobwebs hung off the ceiling and you could barley see the books underneath all the dust particles.
I spent most my time dusting every book and shelf in that room. A small fireplace and a couch sat in the middle of the room. My mind pondered on how Desmond became so wealthy.
The door unlocked as I stepped out of the library, switching off the light. Desmond stepped inside the house. My heart pounded loudly as he looked over at me, nodding his head in a greeting. I did the same.
Bonnie chucked the last few bed sheets in the washing machine and sighed as she slumped on the couch. I sat across from her sighing as well. It was one o' clock and I was already tired.
"So darling" says Bonnie "where about's did you live here in Florida?" She asked
"Boca Raton" I say.
"Ah, near the beach I see"
I nod "I always walked there from my house whenever I could" I say "I hopped in the water with my clothes on since the swimmers there were expensive."
Bonnie chuckled "anything to get in the water, ay?"
"Yeah."
I lay down on the couch, with my head on one of the pillows. I longed for some rest since I hadn't gotten any for the past couple of nights. My eyes began to close.
I hoped that when I opened them again. I would be back at home, in my own cosy bed.
