Aliyna... are you okay. That one question is the only thing that can make me crumble in a matter of seconds; personally I thought about lying to my mum because I didn't want to worry her more than she already was but she pulled that 'you can't lie to me face', so I decided to tell the truth.
"Im excited to go and I'm not lying when I say that but..." I paused for a moment, feeling awkward about actually admitting the truth aloud to both my mum and myself. "But what if this whole thing was a mistake; should I really be staying in Italy for a whole year with a family I don't really know".
My mum starts hysterically laughing out loud at my confession. "Hey! What's so funny, I just opened up to you. Be nice, I'm in a fragile state". Now I too was laughing and I don't even know why but something about all this was a little bit funny.
My mum grabs my cheeks, gives them a little squeeze and said, "Aliyna, you're my daughter and my daughter is kind, caring and generous but most of all she is bored".
my mums words left me speechless so she carried on further to say, " you've been bored for a while now, in your whole 17 years of life I don't think you've ever actually experienced how fun life can be for someone your age" my mum paused for a moment debating what to say next.
"Therefore, the more I've thought about this whole exchange thing, the more I believe you should go experience everything you can in Italy and so that when you come back home to England, I'll be waiting for you with open arms and open ears".
My mums words really touched me she was, right. Up until now I've never done anything that was reckless, adventurous or thrilling; I wasn't a rollercoaster person, I wasn't a competitive sports person either and I've never actually had any serious arguments or problems with anyone. Now I'm thinking about it I sound like a really fucking boring person. Shit.
I looked up at my mum and replied with, " looks like I'm going to Italy", she looked up at me with the biggest smile and said " good, I'm going to bed so wake me before you go, okay". I nodded my head as she gave me a tight hug before heading back up the stairs.
I was just about to relax and watch a film, murder mystery to be exact, when out of nowhere my mum belted from the top of the stairs, " Aliyna don't forget to triple check you suitcase. We don't want a repeat of our last holiday".
Oh yeah that time we went to France; basically I packed my suitcase but I forgot to actually check what I'd packed so all of the essential things a person could possibly leave behind, I did that and maybe more. That's all I'm going to say about that situation.
I laughed and shouted to my mum, "don't worry after that I will never not forget to triple check anything and everything". And with that I heard my mums bedroom door shut, so I looked at the clock on my phone which showed i was currently 5 hours away from being on a plane with a one way ticket to Italy; and honestly, I couldn't wait.
