“Help me!” Lisa says through the phone. Jennie can see her hand running through her hair. “I’m going crazy having to sign my name over and over again!”
“And you say Asher got his dramatics from Bona,” Jennie says as she looks through her stack of documents. “You sound like Asher right now.”
“Rude,” Lisa tells her. “How are the kids? Is Asher sleeping okay? Did Riley have trouble with her homework? Mrs. Jeon mentioned that-”
“Woah, woah, slow your roll there, tiger,” Jennie says, smiling at Lisa’s fretting. “Asher is sleeping fine. Riley finished all of her homework. I helped her.” She steps out of her office and straight to the kitchen to see if Asher was still playing with the dogs. “I think he’s getting too used to having dogs.”
“Great,” Lisa groans. “Now, he’ll want actual dogs in our house.’
Jennie looks into the backyard to see Asher, running around with the dogs while Riley cheers him on, throwing blades of grass at them like it’s confetti. Jennie lets out a small laugh at the scene.
“You wanna talk to him?” She asks Lisa. She tries not to feel offended at Lisa’s eager, worried tone. “Give me a sec.” She puts the phone against her chest and calls out to Asher.
“The view looks great from here!” Lisa says jokingly.
Jennie pulls the phone back again and gives her a glare. “Watch your mouth sweetie.”
Asher and Riley stop and look at Jennie. She waves them over. “Lisa wants to talk to you!”
Asher’s face lights up as he runs towards Jennie, his hands outstretched for the phone. The moment he was in reach of the phone, he grabs it out of Jennie’s hands. She leaves them alone with Lisa and goes to the kitchen to start cooking their dinner. It was Friday so two more days until Riley’s birthday and until Lisa’s return.
Ellie pads in the room, holding a stuffed Heimlich from A Bug’s Life that Lisa got Ellie when they watched the movie a couple of weekends ago, in her arms. It was Ellie’s new favorite toy and she never leaves anywhere without it. She rubs a clenched fist against her eyes trying to wake herself up.
“Mommy,” she whines as she follows Jennie around.
“Hey, sweetie,” Jennie greets.
She holds up her arms, her fists clenching. “Mommy, suggles.”
Jennie places her against her hip and let her snuggle against her neck. “You had a nice nap?”
Ellie nods against her mom’s neck. “Ashy?”
“Outside.”
“With Waywee?”
“Yep, you wanna go outside and play with them? They’re talking to Lisa-”
Ellie’s head shoots up, knocking against Jennie’s chin, making Jennie wince. “Lisa back?”
“No, they’re talking to her on the phone,” Jennie says.
Ellie slumps against her neck again. “Oh,” she says, snuggling further.
Jennie rubs her back, comfortingly. The separation with Lisa was hitting Ellie harder than the other two since she spends her day with Lisa.
“When she back?” Ellie asks for the umpteenth time that week.
“Well today is Friday, she’ll be back Sunday so that’s two more sleeps,” Jennie tells her. “It’s not that long right?”
Ellie nods her head. “Miss her,” she says softly.
“Me too, baby girl,” Jennie says, kissing her side of the face.
