⚠️TRIGGER WARNING: ⚠️There are some very dark, heavy themes ahead including violence, cult brutality, genetic engineering of Pokemon, although I have omitted as many gory scenes as I could. Viewer discretion is advised!

Character cover art: Louis (kinda obvious)

Just as I prepared to take on the first challenge, I quickly opened my Rotom phone to discover there were three new messages in the Gym Challenger Group Chat.

Mackenzie: Best of luck with Louis, hit us up once you've destroyed him!

Danny: Yeah, be careful, Slowbro. The short ones are usually the toughest

Lisa: Good luck Y/N, I'm rooting for you, you deserve this so much!! 💕 And don't forget to tell Crystal how awesome she is!!!

I smiled as I put a thanks in the chat before switching off my phone and turning my attention back towards the door I was about to walk through.

Well, this was it...

My hand began to tremble as I slowly lifted it towards the button. The doors slowly separated, revealing floors of sparkling black granite, and fluorescent blue walls that created an illusion to make them look shrouded in mist.

In the centre of the large hall stood a short, slender figure with wavy black hair. He was wearing a long, purple coat, atop a darker purple tuxedo. It was lined with gold, just like Kossi's Champion cloak. I expected nothing less of an Elite Four member than to be as "fancy" as Crystal and Clyde. He also had very dark, purple eyes that vaguely resembled Moon Stones. And, perhaps as strikingly of all, a large scar stretched vertically down his left eye. He looked the part of a Poison-type specialist. A surprised expression laced his face as I approached.

"Oh, hello there..." he spoke in a mellow, subdued tone. "I'm Louis, the first member of the Elite Four..." As I shook his hand and introduced myself, I realised how his shy personality and lack of confidence stood in complete contrast to his extravagant attire. He proceeded to pull a Luxury Ball out of his pocket. "Well, I don't suppose this will be too difficult for someone such as yourself." He stepped backwards.

"I beg to differ," I replied. "I mean, this is the Elite Test after all."

"Indeed, but consider this the easy stage. Don't be too disappointed if I'm not much of a challenge to you. I am only sixteen years old, after all."

"You're still a member of the Elite Four. And at such a young age, that's really impressive." I attempted to encourage him. "And as you age you'll only grow stronger."

Louis smiled, nodding his head. "I suppose so, if I really set my mind to it. Anyways, I battle with Normal Type Pokemon. I hope that's alright with you."

Resisting the temptation to ask him about the scar on his eye, I nodded politely before readying Medicham's Pokeball.

You are challenged by Louis of the Elite Four!

Louis sent out Dudunsparce!

Go! Medicham!

Medicham was the only fighting-type Pokemon that I had consistently worked with throughout my journey. I could never gel with them, much to my dismay. I decided to open up this battle with Close Combat.

Medicham used Close Combat!

I stood in awe as the opposing Dudunsparce's HP bar was zapped into almost nothing, just a tiny bit of red left, suggesting he had hung on to 1 HP.

Dudunsparce used Dig! It buried its way underground!

DAMN!!! I had no counters for this!

The muscles in my face tightened in frustration. So close, and yet so far.
