The next day, Gilbert and I were walking through the forest by my house. He seemed to be recovering quite quickly. As per usual, we didn't talk about the kiss. We tended to avoid uncomfortable situations like that. If we don't bring it up, it's like it never happened."I think I want to return to school on Monday." He said. I was glad. If he was ready to go to school it meant he was feeling better. And god I've missed school. But it just didn't feel right leaving him alone.
"That's good."
He grabbed my hand and interlaced our fingers as we continued to walk. It was a comfortable silence, not awkward. We stopped at a small river running through the forest. I saw a really pretty rock in the river so I knelt down to pick it up. I felt a hand on my back and then very very cold.
Gilbert had pushed me in the river. When I surface I saw his face. He was laughing so hard I forgot to be mad. I hadn't seen him this happy in a long time. His smile was contagious.
"Blythe! Get over here and help me out!" I giggled. He walked over to the edge of the river and grabbed my hand. I used it to fling him into the water beside me.
We were laughing and splashing each other, and we didn't even notice it had gotten dark.
"Oh no, mother and father will be looking for us." I said, climbing out of the water. As soon as the air hit me I was freezing. Gilbert and I ran home, and our clothes had began to collect frost from the chilly air.
"Where have you two been? And why are you all wet!" My mother screamed at us as we approached the house.
"Sorry mother, I tripped and fell in the river, Gilbert had to come in to help me out." I lied through my teeth. What she didn't know couldn't hurt her. She got us some towels, then went upstairs.
Dinner had gone cold, and Gilbert and I had to eat alone at the table. Mother and father had already gone to bed, so we had to clean up too.
I snuck glances at Gilbert all through dinner, but he didn't once look up from his food.
After we had finished washing dishes we were standing between our two doors. "Uh, goodnight." I said to him. This was so weird. Earlier I thought we were finally getting back to our old habits, but now everything was awkward and said again.
I guess I can't expect things to go back to how they were before. His dad is dead so...
While I was lost in my thoughts I felt the soft skin of Gilbert's lips against mine in a quick peck. "Goodnight Victoria." He opened his door swiftly and walked through. I was left stunned in the hallway.
Was that just something we did now?
I must say I slept easy that night, with a huge smile on my face.
