It's been ten days since Mr Blythe passed away. Gilbert has moved into my house, and is staying in what used to be the guest room, which is right beside my bedroom. My parents let both of us stay home from school the past week, as Gilbert is in no state to be learning, and he needs company.

The funeral is this morning. My mother fixed me up a modest black dress to wear. It's snowing.

Gilbert, my mother, father and I all walked to the ceremony. During the ceremony I held Gilbert's hand. Tears rolled down his face. I know he hates crying in front of people.

After the funeral was over my parents walked back home, Gilbert wanted a few minutes by his father's grave. He requested that I stay too.

He knelt down by the headstone and whispered something I couldn't quite hear, and then he walked up to me. I wrapped my arm around his shoulder as we started walking home.

That night

Everyone was silent during dinner. That was the way it had been since Gilbert moved in. Nobody knew what to say around someone who had lost a person that important to them.

It was my turn to wash the dishes after dinner. While I was scrubbing off the food I started thinking. Thinking about how everything was going to change now. How long would it take for Gilbert and I to go back to the cheery playful dynamic we'd had since we were 5?

I turned off the water and headed up to bed. I lay awake for a long time staring at the ceiling. God I really didn't know what was going to happen.

Just then I heard a knock on my door.

"Hello? Victoria?" Gilbert whispered as he stepped into my room. I sat up.

"Gilbert? What are you doing awake?" He came and sat on the edge of my bed.

"I could ask you the same thing." He frowned. "Listen. I know I've been distant lately, I just don't know what to do without him."

"No, I completely understand. I can't even imagine loosing either of my parents. You're very strong, Blythe." I placed my hand on top of his. He smiled.

"How about we go for a walk tomorrow afternoon?" He suggested. I nodded.

"It's getting late though, we should go to sleep." After I said that we stayed still for a few minutes, never breaking eye contact. Out of nowhere he placed his hand on the back of my neck, and leaned in.

I WAS KISSING GILBERT BLYTHE!! And for real this time, not just a kid kiss.

My cheeks were on fire by the time we pulled away. He got up, almost tripping on the uneven floorboards. "Uh, I should go. Goodnight Victoria."

I nodded goodnight to him and he closed the door on his way out.

I kissed Gilbert! Wait what was going to happen to our friendship?

I never thought he liked me back.
