Mackenzie

I woke to my body being dragged.

I was dumped in a solid glass cell with a bed, white linen and a toilet behind a white wall.

At least it had that. It was nicer than I had been expecting.

But I knew the scent that surrounded me. Pine and fresh water. And wolf.

I was at the pack house.

There were two guards at the wooden double doors outside my cell.

I slowly stood to my feet as my vision recentred.

Arlo was dumped into the cell next to me and I watched as the pack members left us there.

I had no idea how long I had left.

Any minute Cerberus could announce that my punishment was to begin. Something I should have been dreading but I wasn't.

I was prepared to take what I had to but I did want to know everything before I left.

So once we were alone, I bashed on the glass wall between me and Arlo to wake him up.

"Arlo!" I snapped.

He groaned and his eyes slowly blinked open.

He rubbed his forehead then sat up, leaning against the back wall.

I bashed the glass again.

"Arlo."

He looked up at me and then around at the cells we were in.

"Damn," he whispered.

"You got that right. We're fucked so how about before we get put in the ground you explain what the hell is actually going on?" I demanded.

Arlo sighed and nodded, hanging his hands on his knees.

"What do you want to know?" he asked.

"Why the lust?"

"We needed you to sleep with your partners at specific times. When the hormones hit a certain height inside you. When they got high enough, it triggered the bell."

"Wait so the bell was based on our hormones?"

He nodded, "Yes."

"And you were working for or against Cerberus?"

"Both. Just trying to survive."

That was fair. Still didn't make my life any easier. In fact, it had made it hell.

"And the creatures. What the hell did you do to them?"

"I was telling the truth about those. They really were failed experiments. But the experiments we did, were not what you think," he admitted.

"I gathered that. What were you doing to us?" I asked.

The wooden door swung open then and Cerberus strode inside.

"He was running a fertility clinic, weren't you Arlo?"

I sucked in a breath and backed up from the glass.

"You were what?" I said tightly.

"The frog bones. The flowers. The components in the drugs they were giving you. Project Ankh. It was all a ploy to see if werewolves could procreate with other species without being mated."

I couldn't breathe.

Arlo was pale as he nodded, "The other faction have a more open view of the werewolf kind. Our population is going down, we are not able to have young as often as before, mates more rare than we are used to. The decline is enough to have the faction worried. So they asked us to find the solution."
