Earth [motto: PREPARE FOR NUCLEAR ATTACK']:
The year is 3050, and JcJenson has absorbed most major corporations, except for Dexter Industries, mainly because they own several planets and a full blown military comparable to pre-2043 USA military power.
The Mexican government detected several ICBM launches from the European Union, except they weren't ICBMs. They were the first rockets of the Europa III project, which intended to take ordinary residents of the EU off-world, since climate change had gone past the point of no return, meaning no recovery.
The Mexican government retaliated and launched 20 of their Minuteman IV ICBMs (each with 5 12-megaton warheads), which were 'on loan' from the Republic of Arizona. They struck major cities such as New Berlin, Old Amsterdam and Brussels.
The rest of the world's leaders looked at Mexico with shock, as they were informed that the EU's supposed 'ICBM' launches were really just space program launches. In the leader's view, this was an unprovoked aggressive act.
In retaliation for the nuclear bombardment of the world's major machinery and vehicle supplier, many nations (including the Second Republic of California, Republic of Arizona, Texas, Siberia, the South American Union, and North Africa) launched their own missiles onto Mexico in the heat and intensity of the moment. Raw anger clouded proper judgment, for which many leaders would pay for by death counts in their nations.
After the dust and bombs had settled, the majority of Central America had been completely destroyed and was underwater. A small sliver of land between the newly oceanized sea of Central America and the Free States (California, Arizona, Texas) remained, which Mexico clung onto.
However, this caused the water of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican side of the Pacific Ocean to be highly irradiated, including sea life in the area.
Very quickly, people with access to the Central American ocean began getting sick.
Soon, the United States government and their citizens began to squabble and fight over rations of uncontaminated food and supplies.
The central government was split apart after the people stormed the white house and seized control. The current federal government was shoved onto the nation of the Eastern States of America, while a new government with non-corrupt leaders was created in the new nation of the Western Republic of the United States.
This division shocked many, and with a major power split, enemies of the now defunct US government and nation started invading previously USA-protected nations near them in order to try and get more resources.
20 years later, and things have not changed much. Regional governments are squabbling over every last thing, every last resource. The pollution has clouded the once blue skies of the Earth, and water pollution has gotten extremely bad.
However, some of the better-off nations have sent a majority of their citizens off-world and onto Kepler 452-b. With only pretty much skeleton crews running governments and basic services for the remaining people on the richer nations while they try to get every resident of their nation off Earth, other desperate, more poor nations are trying to get some more land and try to force those richer nations to get everyone else on Earth off.
