A week after Davey was introduced to Crutchie and Mush, we were all sitting on the steps to the lodge house.

Crutchie was sitting on Mush's lap like always, and Davey was sitting next to me, resting his head on my shoulder and holding my hand tightly in his.

"Then he comes up to me and says, 'you sure? These babies are selling like hotcakes.' I mean, who says stuff like that?" Davey finished.

Crutchie and Mush, along with Davey burst out laughing, and I felt my face turning red.

"Why do you torment me like this?.." I muttered.

At that Mush started laughing even harder and nearly dropped Crutchie.

"Oh come on... don't be like that," Davey whispered as he kissed me.

How could I stay mad at him when he was happy like this? He placed his hand on my waist and kissed him back with the same burning desire.

"Get a room," Mush groaned.

"You know, we all have to put up with you and Crutchie, but do you hear us complaining?" I glared at Mush.

Mush muttered something under his breath and Crutchie rolled his eyes. Just then a police officer began to walk towards us. He was holding a small piece of paper and studying it, as if it had a hidden message on it.

We quickly scattered apart from each other so that now Mush and Davey were on the bottom step while Crutchie sat on the top step while I stood up and leaned on the wall next to the door.

"You four work for The World?" The officer asked when he finally reached us.

"Yes sir, we do," Crutchie replied politely.

Us newsies had rehearsed this scenario enough times so that now we know what to do, say, and act so that we wouldn't get in trouble.

"Any of you know someone named Duce Pulitzer then?"

We all froze.

Davey looked up at me, his expression somehow confused, worried, and questioning all at the same time. Mush and Crutchie looked up at me, also worried. I took a deep breath as I prepared myself for what might follow.

"That would be me, sir," I said calmly.

Davey opened his mouth like he was about to say something, I gave him a quick nod and he shut his mouth and looked back at the officer.

"I need you to come with me then," he began.

"Why does he need to come with you?" Davey snapped.

I hurried down to Davey and grabbed his arm.

"Davey. Don't."

He opened his mouth to protest, but I shook my head.

"I'm sorry officer, I'll come with you."

He began to walk away and I followed.

I glanced back at Davey, and as soon as our eyes met, he turned away from me and headed into the lodge house with Crutchie and Mush hurrying to catch up to him.
