I opened my eyes slowly to a knocking sound. I'm in my bed. How'd I get here? I opened the door and saw Jesse.
"Isn't your mom coming?" He asked. My eyes popped out of my head.
"SHIT!" I yelled. It's 8:30. "Can you please hide your stash in a better place and hide the vodka in the fridge too."
"I already did." He said. Wow. I have no time to waste so I started getting ready right in front of him.
"Can you clean up a little bit please?" I said while taking my shirt and jeans off. I searched my closet for a comfortable shirt to wear. Jesse didn't respond.
"Jesse?" I said looking at him. He was looking at my body. "Jesse!" I said louder. He looked at my face quickly coming out of his daze.
"Can you clean up a little bit please?" I asked again.
"I did." He said. Amazing.
"Can you spray some febreze or Lysol to get rid of any smells?"
"I did." He said. Woah. I couldn't help but hug him. I ran towards him and wrapped my arms around his neck.
"I freaking love you." I said.
"Yeah yeah. Get off of me." He said. But he's still the same rude and mean Jesse.
"Ok. But don't act like that when my mom gets here." I put on some shorts and a shirt.
"What's her name?"
"Wesley. But call her Mrs.Downs." I said walking out my room checking out the apartment. I started to get a headache.
"Omg I have a hangover." Jesse reached in a cabinet and gave me chaser pills. I swallowed them quick and went to wash up in the bathroom. I heard a knock at the door.
"Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! Oh my god!" I panicked as I ran from the bathroom.
"Calm the fuck down girl." He said answering the door. I saw my mom in the door way.
"Hello. You must be Jesse." My mom said holding out her hand.
"That's me." He said shaking her hand.
"I'm Wesley Downs. Erin's mother." She said.
"Good morning Mrs.Downs and Welcome." He said stepping aside. Wow. I'm impressed.
"Your daughter is right there." He said.
"Erin" she said hugging me.
"Hey mom." I said while she walked around.
"Show me your room!" She said. I walked in front of her to my plain room.
"Oh... it's so plain and basic." She said.
"Yeah well I just got here yesterday." I said looking at Jesse who was rolling his eyes behind my moms back. My mom stepped out the room and sat down on a couch in the living room.
"Well Jesse since my daughter is gonna be living with you, I think I should know a little bit about you." Uh-oh. She said tapping her hands on her lap. Jesse took a seat in front of her and I sat beside him. This is the first time I've actually sat this close to him not including last night with the drugs.
"Well my full name is Jesse Ryder Shaw. I'm from San Diego. I was raised by my grandmother-" he was cut off by my mom.
"What happened to your parents?" She asked. I gave her a warning look and looked at Jesse. His jaw clenched and I could tell he was upset now.
"You don't have to answer that." I said looking up into his eyes.
"Yeah. You don't have to. Erin's dad left before she even turned one. She doesn't even remember him. Did your dad do the same?" My mom said. Jesse looked down at his lap. "He did, didn't he?" My mom continued. I closed my eyes for awhile. I can't believe she said that. I couldn't think of what to do. I saw his eyes get red. Without thinking I grabbed his hand and interlocked with mine. I didn't know what to do. My dad is a touchy subject and I bet his is too. My mom looked at our hands and looked back up at me.
"Are you two a thing or something?" She asked. I stood up letting go of his hand, "Goodbye mom." I said.
"Wha- what? You're kicking me out?" She asked.
"Yes. Yes I am. I love you but that was uncalled for and very rude." I said grabbing her hand and leading her to the door.
"Wha-" I cut her off by closing the door in her face and locking it. I've never been that rude to my mom but I've never had to because she doesn't usually act like that. I don't know what the hell is her problem today. I saw Jesse still sitting on the couch. I sighed and walked into the kitchen. I opened the fridge and grabbed a bottled water.
"Sorry." I said. Jesse didn't reply. Why bother? I walked to my room and closed the door. I laid on my bed and I got a call from... ugh George.
"Hello" I said.
"Your mom just text me."
"Mhm."
"What happened?"
"She was being rude."
"How?"
"Asking Jesse about his parents because his grandmother was his guardian and assuming that his dad left him like mine did."
"Yeah. She had a few drinks before she came."
"AND SHE WAS DRIVING?"
"Ernie drove her but tell Jesse that I'm deeply sorry for that and I'll tell your mom to call you when she's sober."
"Don't bother." I said hanging up the phone. Telling Jesse that my stepdad is deeply sorry won't make a difference but it might if I tell him she had a few drinks. I got up and opened my door. I walked out and didn't see Jesse. He's probably gone because I didn't hear his door shut which I usually do. I assume he's out. I grabbed a sticky note and pin from my desk
'My stepdad called and said my mom had a few drinks before she came. She's never like that. Thank you for how you handled it and making sure everything was alright. I appreciate it.' I placed it on the counter and took a nap on the sofa.
