After her intense struggle with the waves, Agnes finally found her way back to the cabin, her muscles sore and her heart still racing from the adrenaline.
Inside, she quickly turned on the shower, the warm water offering a welcome relief to her chilled and salt-crusted body. As she stood under the soothing stream, she let out a contented sigh. The water washed away the remnants of her near-drowning ordeal, and the cabin's gentle warmth began to seep into her bones.
Agnes settled onto the cabin's couch, the sun's rays filtering through the windows and casting a warm glow on the rustic furnishings. She let herself relax with the faint scent of the sea air and the tension of the day slowly melting away.
The cabin, with its well-loved furniture and subtle signs of past visitors, felt like a comforting embrace after the chaos of the ocean.
After a few moments, Agnes decided to check in with her friends. She grabbed her phone, expecting to send a quick update, but to her frustration, the signal was nonexistent. She paced around the cabin, desperately trying to find a signal, moving from one corner to another in hopes of catching a bar of reception.
Agnes tried various spots in the cabin, lifting her phone high and angling it in different directions. "Pa-hard to get ang signal ha," she huffed and puffed, her earlier exhaustion returning as she continued her search.
In a moment of exasperation, Agnes decided to step up onto the sofa for a better vantage point, thinking it might give her the edge she needed. She climbed up, lifting herself. Just as she was about to stretch her phone towards the ceiling, she didn't notice the low-hanging wooden beam above her.
With a loud thud, Agnes bumped her head against the beam, causing her to lose her balance.
"Giatay!"
She stumbled backward, her phone slipping from her hand, and fell hard onto the floor. A box that had been perched on the high shelf tumbled down with her, scattering dust and small trinkets around her.
Agnes lay there for a moment, groaning from the impact and trying to clear her vision. Dust settled around her, and she looked up to see the wooden beam still in its low, unyielding position. "Sakit, pota."
Rubbing her sore head, Agnes glanced at the box lying upside down on the floor. As her curiosity piqued, she carefully lifted it, wondering what had caused the commotion. As she tipped the box upright, she was greeted by an assortment of old polaroid pictures and a leather-bound journal.
Agnes reached for the items, her fingers brushing against the faded photographs and the well-worn journal. She picked up a stack of polaroids, the edges curling slightly with age.
"Huh?"
Her eyes widened as she picked up one of the polaroids, her breath catching in her throat. The picture showed a girl, her bright red hair shining under the sun, and her smile unmistakable. The resemblance was striking. "Si Maiko ba 'to?"
